martin<p>Pressure to beat the dragon as soon as possible leads to players having multiple goes at it, starting before they are really powerful enough, learning and adapting as they go. </p><p>Some crews specialize in recovering bodies and selling them for resurrection them (like Dungeon Meshi). Also, giant spiders that creep around the lower levels and drag bodies off to be preserved in webs, including those left by the dragon. Strange Quark<p>I went on an adventure in the Wieliczka Salt Mine today. It's basically a 9-level <a href="https://dice.camp/tags/megadungeon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>megadungeon</span></a>, but we only got to explore levels 1-3.</p><p>You start by going down 54 flights of stairs to a depth of 65m (level 1). According to the local rumour table, level 9 is 327m down.</p><p><a href="https://dice.camp/tags/Dungeon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Dungeon</span></a> corridors are standard 10' width. There are 287 Km of tunnels.</p><p>Everything is carved out of rock salt.</p>

Due to training time for levelling up and a couple of other things, there were times when somebody wasn't available to go into the dungeon. For those times, the player might roll up a backup character, play a henchy, or the other players would agree to advance the timeline so that their character was available.</p>

LexTenebris<p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://thefolklore.cafe/@juergen_hubert" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">@<span>juergen_hubert</span></a></span> The problem with the megadungeon is very much the problem with travel in any context – the initial bits are cool, getting to where you want to go is cool, but the repetitive, tedious bits along the way in the middle are absolutely reprehensible after the first couple of times. Most systems make the process of exploration as painful as they can out of a desire for "realism."</p><p>Newsflash: Reality is often tedious and boring. That's why we're not out exploring caves and putting our lives in the line every moment we do so.</p><p>My own feeling is that you should run a <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/megadungeon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>megadungeon</span></a> in very much the same way you would exploring any sort of outdoor adventure; there are places that are safe enough to camp, there are places with interesting things to do, and then there's that smear of places in the middle that you resolve with just a couple of rolls, dispense with for color, and get on to what you really would rather be doing.</p><p><a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/TTRPG" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>TTRPG</span></a></p>
