Maggie Maybe<p>This is interesting because though I wasn’t paying constant attention, I don’t remember them reporting 18% positivity last summer.<br>But I do remember the early days where you could look at the positivity rates in July (for example) then later when you look at comparisons the July numbers were A LOT higher than reported in or right after July.</p><p>From the link: “As of July 14, weekly test positivity is just 4.8%, up about 1% from the previous week, per CDC data.Comparatively, the rate was 18% during the peak of last summer's wave.”</p><p>I realize there’s a bit of a delay in the reporting but it seemed a lot more sinister than that. Broadwaybabyto<p>Covid has caused an increase in patients with Dysautonomia, a condition which destroyed my quality of life</p><p>Yet at Dysautonomia International’s big fundraiser, there was no mask requirement</p><p>Worse, they’re publicly stating masks don’t work &amp; quoting the debunked Cochrane study </p><p>I’m generally not one to punch down on advocacy organizations because I think we need to fight like heck to lift one another up. </p><p>I appreciate that they had HEPA filters, corsi rosenthal boxes and were apparently providing free masks.<br>But I can’t sit silently when an organization that should be protecting people starts spouting far right rhetoric</p><p>What difference does it make if you put masks at the door when you’re telling people they don’t work?</p><p>If you’re not leading by example &amp; wearing them yourself?<br>People look to these organizations to set the tone. </p><p>They assume they have our best interests at heart. </p><p>Dissuading people from masking during a pandemic is not advocacy. It’s not patient centred. It’s not leadership.<br>We’ve known for years that Long Covid often causes Dysautonomia/POTS. </p><p>There’s been such a significant increase in patients that there aren’t enough doctors to treat them. </p><p>Many have lost everything to the condition and are now fully disabled.<br>Yet this conference will end up causing more disability. </p><p>It will end up creating more patients when what we desperately need to do is stop the spread of Covid and start helping those who’ve been disabled already. </p><p>The best way to do that is to wear a mask.<br>Their post says: “there is insufficient evidence to show that mandatory masking in a public setting does anything to reduce COVID risk<br>Please read this Cochrane review, considered to be the definitive unbiased analysis of this important public health question”</p><p>That’s a lie.<br>They say that people feel “passionately” about the subject but then absolve themselves of any responsibility to actually protect the attendees. </p><p>They claim that doctors and Long Covid researchers agreed there was no need to mandate masks at the event.<br>I will be honest, I wish every indoor event and conference had mandatory masking. </p><p>I’m sick of people dying and becoming disabled from a disease we know how to prevent. </p><p>But I also recognize that almost no one is willing to require masks because we’re cosplaying 2019 “normal”<br>Hospitals, medical conferences and events for disabled people need to be the exception. </p><p>They need to do better. </p><p>They need to realize that they have a duty to do no harm. </p><p>They have a responsibility not to make sick people even sicker.<br>If they’re not willing to do that, the bare minimum they can do is not deride those who do take precautions. </p><p>They could encourage masking rather than spread lies that they don’t work. </p><p>They could refrain from sharing junk science that’s been largely debunked &amp; discredited<br>We know masks work. </p><p>We know respirators work even better. </p><p>We know two way masking is better than one. </p><p>We know asymptomatic transmission is a very real threat. </p><p>We know all of this, and yet “advocacy” organizations are choosing to ignore it.</p><p>We have to push back on this. Over 400 million people have Long Covid. What do you mean “stop gap measure”? </p><p>I haven’t been able to get a Covid vaccine since the booster crashed me hard in November 2021, I’ve never had Covid. I know this for a fact because I have MECFS and the slightest bit of sickness will mess me up (plus I have taken at least 79 covid tests in 5 years all negative.) I crashed for weeks because I had a mild ear infection I would not have an asymptomatic covid infection.</p><p>Everyone I know who’s had two, four, six, even eight Covid vaccines has had Covid at least once because they stopped wearing a mask. </p><p>I’m not anti-vax, I hope y’all get 20 covid vaccines if that’s what you want. Broadwaybabyto<p>Another reminder that words matter. </p><p>There’s an increasing and concerning push to label maskers as “bad”</p><p>We keep hearing that “only criminals wear masks” </p><p>Now ICE agents are “wearing masks” while kidnapping and disappearing people. </p><p>The result is that “masks” takes on a negative connotation in the public sphere, which makes surviving as a high risk disabled person so much harder. </p><p>We already have mask bans in some States and counties. Maggie Maybe<p>I need to celebrate this win somewhere and none of my friends care about this stuff, but I FINALLY got maintenance at this apartment complex to understand and accept that they will not be allowed in my apartment without masks, no exceptions.</p><p>It only took five years, me buying signs to put on both doors (they have been there since the summer of 2021), and me slamming the door in their face and locking it before they finally realized this is not negotiable. </p><p>I’m a little nervous that the two guys coming tomorrow will take their masks off as soon as I go in my bedroom and shut the door leaving them to do their thing, but my plan is to look like crap &amp; cough a lot so I scare them. Someone was standing in the aisle not far away. </p><p>I was secretly thinking: "Are you not sitting down here because you think the mask means I'm infectious? I'm the least likely person on this whole bus to give you a germ!
