A few weeks ago, I installed #LiveCaptions (using #Nix), a program that listens to computer audio and displays subtitles almost instantaneously

I thought it was mainly intended for deaf people

I installed it by curiosity to test an accessibility tool

I am not fluent in English, especially orally

Tonight, this tool helped me follow a meeting in english

La journée d'étude « Quelles médiations pour l' #ÉMI ? », organisée par l' #ENSSIB et l' #INSPÉ de l’Académie de #Lyon, marque une petite pause.

Elle reprend bientôt avec une conférence de Béatrice Micheau, maître de conférences en Sciences de l’information et de la communication à l'INSPÉ Lille et membre du laboratoire GERiiCO de l’Université de Lille, intitulée « Médiations et choix pédagogiques en EMI : à qui s'adresse-ton ? ».

This is a very good point. Not every conference has live captioning or a sign language interpreter. Since Live Captions runs locally, you can have this on screen during your in-world live conference talks to improve the accessibility of your talks even if the conference is lacking in this area.

And if you’re running a conference, it’s a no-brainer (and free) to have this projected on a screen for all talks.

Those have by now actually grown quite well. You could not only use this in lifestreams, but on-the-floor presentations as well.

In a perfect world, all videos would have transcripts, and live videos would have captioning. It's not just a requirement for people without hearing to be able to participate in pop culture and video chats, it's a luxury for people with hearing who just prefer to read what's been said. Not all software has captioning built-in though, and some that does relies on third-party cloud services to function. Live Captions is an application for the Linux desktop that provides instant, local, and open source captioning for video.
