TJShy Green Another long exposure and also using the solar filter (the filter used usually to observe solar eclipses), but this time, coupled with my modified camera; a camera that is tinkered with to be able to take a full-spectrum images (with the help of other filters). Again, I'm using here the Rokinon 8mm fisheye lens, which is completely manual, and the solar filter was taped to the back of the lens. I was quite surprised for the exposure here. I was expecting something in the range of 3-5 hours because I did so with a regular camera few days prior to this, but unexpectedly, the calculated exposure time here was about 42 minutes and 50 seconds, so approximately 43 minutes. The general look here looks like a scene that I'd get from using an infrared filter on the lens with a low threshold (650~700nm). TJ隱 Another long exposure, and this one was like an adventure for me, for various reasons: - One: It was taken with my favorite fisheye lens (Rokinon 8mm) which is completely manual; so all calculations and control must be done manually here (plus a lot of test shots). - Two: The fact that it is a fisheye lens, I had to improvise a way to fit any filter "in" it. No way to put any filter on the front; so, the filters would be applied to the back (by insertion into some grooves or using tiny pieces of duct tape). - Three: I've used a solar filter here, which is typically used to observe the sun and solar eclipses, and typically it has high opacity. - Four: Because of the filter, the exposure at basic ISO level would naturally be "long". Literally... "long". The exposure for this shot here was 5 hours and 20 minutes approximately. So, the scene here appears empty, but in reality there were people going in and out and there was pretty much movement around the place, but nothing was recorded (of course). The colors also had to be fixed as the filter shifted the colors considerably. The noise level is HORRENDOUS to say the least! I really didn't even bother cleaning much of the noise here; cleaning it would leave me with a smudged image. Despite all of that, though, it is weird that back then, there was not much breeze or wind to shake the branches (something I was hoping for actually to add action to the scene). I've noticed that every time I try to do a long exposure, not much breeze or wind play out - bad luck? Maybe. TJFleeting So, for my previous posts from a stroll that I had on February 27th, I'm ending these posts abruptly. Actually only two shots were left but I think they're not that interesting to post here. Maybe I'll post them later; who knows. Anyway, fast forward to some experiments with long exposures that I did in March already, and this one here is from March 3rd. Using a makeshift adapter over my Canon EF 15mm fisheye lens and fitting a variable ND on it, and using f/22 (max) to lengthen the exposure as much as possible. You can tell it was a sunny day here, since with all these settings (with variable ND set to 5 stops, max), I've managed to shoot for only 18 minutes. What I like about long exposures is the "ghostly" or apparition-like feeling because of the moving objects. When doing long exposures, the final result is almost unpredictable, which makes up for the general excitement when doing such type of photography. TJA Night Of Reading Shot on February 14th, this one was a bit of risk-taking. Every Friday midnight I'd be reading Quran (when things are calm and quiet but not always). I usually sit in the balcony, but this time, I've decided to read in the yard and do an experiment of long exposure as I read. I've hanged the camera down from the shade in the yard using a special mounting clamp, pointing downward just above me. It's a bit of a thrill; However trust I have in my gear, there is always a chance of error, right? Anyway, things went peacefully. The exposure took about 37 minutes, using Voigtländer 20mm with ND1000 (10 stops) from Kenko. The hard part, though, was dragging the ladder here and there and taking test shots and taking the camera off and putting it back on (several times). The remote trigger failed me a bit and I wished that I've used the old-fashioned cable remote for this task. The rest is a story of post-processing and rectifying the image as much as possible to keep up with the straight lines. The noise level is out of the question here; long exposures and noise go hand in hand! Seeing how the previous trials failed (not completely, but I didn't like the results, specially that cars didn't pass through as often as I hoped), I've decided to have another go at it, but this time I'm doing it the old classical way: Take many shots, and stack them in PS and merge them. Thus, I've run the camera on "auto-pilot," shooting continuously for 10 minutes with an average exposure of 13 seconds - total was about 46 shots. I've stacked it all and merged them together, and it was one heck of an edit! TJ120 Seconds This is the second shot in this mini-series, and this time it is a long exposure for 120 seconds, or 2 minutes. I was controlling the length of the exposure by changing the stops in the variable ND. It is ironic how that I had square ND filters for a long time and barely used them, and when I finally get a variable ND filter (just few months back), I use it at night rather than in daytime! TJCrossroad Starting a new "mini-" series if you will here. This one was done in February 12th, as I had a night walk to the nearby traffic light (carrying my tripod and camera), planning to do some long exposures. Generally speaking, the results weren't up to my expectations, but I managed to salvage some shots. For this shoot, I've used Voigtländer 20mm, coupled with a variable ND filter (yes, ND, at night, for long exposure), and "Starry Night" filter from Kenko. This filter is supposedly used to reduce the light pollution, and seems awkward to use it in such situations, but I just wanted to try, since I've never used this one before even though I got it months ago. This filter also has a bluish tint, and I had to set the white balance properly (using WB correction tool); and despite all of that, processing the images in terms of colors was a bit of a task, especially in terms of the color halos (or bleeding), which eventually, I had to make peace with! The exposure for this one was about 7 minutes.
