Niets is minder waar: Flow, genomineerd voor zowel de Oscar voor beste buitenlandse film als die voor beste animatie, is een creatie van de Letse regisseur Gints Zilbalodis. En wat voor een.<br>Een wereld zonder mensen – maar met overwoekerde ruïnes – overstroomt. (Mijn kennis van archeologie laat me zodanig in de steek dat de gebeurtenissen zich voor mijn ongeoefende oog net zo goed in Mesopotamië als in Meso-Amerika zouden kunnen voltrekken.) Op zoek naar droge poten klampen een schuchtere zwarte kat, een onverschillige capibara, een aanhankelijke golden retriever, een bezitterige ringstaartmaki en een eigengereide secretarisvogel zich vast aan een afgebladderde zeilboot. Gaandeweg wordt dit toevluchtsoord hun Noach-loze ark om het immer stijgende waterpeil te trotseren.<br>Het esthetische hoogtepunt is de scène waarin de beesten door een verzonken stad dobberen die het midden houdt tussen Babylon en Venetië. De digitale lichtinval is zo spectaculair dat zelfs Joseph Brodsky – niemand beschreef zonlicht eloquenter dan hij – superlatieven tekort zou komen. Zilbalodis en zijn Baltische team hebben alles uit de kast getrokken om een kunstwerk te maken dat in niets lijkt op de bekende formule van de Pixars en DreamWorksen van deze aardbol.<br>Eveneens prijzenswaardig: net als de plaats van handeling zijn ook de dialogen ontmenselijkt. Alle communicatie vindt plaats middels dierengeluiden (al is de capibara ingesproken door een babykameel). Charlie Chaplin en Buster Keaton hadden geen stem nodig om een meeslepend verhaal te vertellen; Flow bewijst dat ook antropomorfe dieren geen vereiste vormen voor een aangrijpende vertelling.
