Question for those cleverer than I am with the AV1 codec
When encoding AV1 videos without denoising, do you still need to specify a grain synthesis level?
I tested a grainy 1080P file (from bluray) at 12, 20 and 30 & they look no different with only file sizes changing
film-grain-denoise=0:film-grain=x
SVT AV1, CRF 15, Preset 6, FastFlix was used
Progress on the #homecinema: Everything is there:
- Projector (150€)
- Screen (30€)
- 5.1 Sound (Speakers 50€, Receiver 60€)
What's missing: Some speaker wire to make the cable management as invisivle as possible.
Next challenge: Getting #Fedora #Linux to output surround over HDMI...

Ok so it seems it is possible to wear out a blu-ray drive. I just had to replace the Blu-ray drive in my media server because it was no longer able to read 4k-blu-rays.
by the way :patching the firmware so it can read 4k blu-rays is a rather convoluted process on linux. Luckily you only have to do it once.

I got impatient and bought #gladiator2 on appleTV instead of waiting for the disc. It's good enough that i don't think that I will need the disc. Picture quality is excellent and the atmos sound is very atmospheric (is that a word?)., The bass is a little light but Shane Lee noticed the same in his review of the Kaleidescape version so it is probably a deliberate choice that it is to sound like that on #homecinema
BTW: it is one of those appletv movies that sound better when played on Nvidia Shield or any other device with direct audio passthrough. Edit: The difference is not so great though
