Justine SmithiesBeen playing around with <a href="https://snac.smithies.me.uk?t=nedm" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#NEDM</a> on <a href="https://snac.smithies.me.uk?t=freebsd" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#FreeBSD</a> and not only does it build but it definitely does show some promise. Be warned it is still a little rough around the edges but it does remind me of <a href="https://snac.smithies.me.uk?t=herbstluftwm" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#HerbstluftWM</a> with it's frames and it comes with an integrated status bar and wallpaper helper which in my mind could be removed and the choice left to the user. The status bar is aimed at Linux users but you can disable it and use your own like <a href="https://snac.smithies.me.uk?t=waybar" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Waybar</a> .<br><blockquote>NEDM is a modern, feature-rich Wayland compositor built on top of wlroots, evolved from the Cagebreak window manager. It provides a tiling window management experience with integrated desktop components including a status bar, wallpaper support, and comprehensive configuration options.<br></blockquote><a href="https://codeberg.org/rozodru/NEDM" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://codeberg.org/rozodru/NEDM</a><br><br>A sample video.<br><br><a href="https://andmc.ca/mov/nedm.mp4" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://andmc.ca/mov/nedm.mp4</a><br><br><a href="https://snac.smithies.me.uk?t=wayland" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Wayland</a> <a href="https://snac.smithies.me.uk?t=tillingwm" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#TillingWM</a><br>
tomterl :emacs:<p>Finally started moving my setup to niri - almost there after a bit of tinkering; rofi-pass needs some work, other than that I'm almost there.<br>Being able to work like in herbstluftwm in a Wayland environment with the added benefit of scrolling workspaces feels good.</p><p><a href="https://floss.social/tags/niri" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>niri</span></a> <a href="https://floss.social/tags/herbstluftwm" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>herbstluftwm</span></a> <a href="https://floss.social/tags/wayland" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>wayland</span></a></p>
Justine SmithiesSo still on my <a href="https://snac.smithies.me.uk?t=openbsd" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#OpenBSD</a> adventure and although I missed images in the terminal be it <code>sixel</code> in <code>xterm</code> or the kitty protocol in <code>kitty</code>, I've decided to stick with good old <a href="https://snac.smithies.me.uk?t=xterm" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Xterm</a> . Also on my <a href="https://snac.smithies.me.uk?t=freebsd" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#FreeBSD</a> daily driver I'm used to such luxuries as icons in the terminal like font awesome or nerd fonts but even though I could have used <code>alacritty</code> or <code>kitty</code> to achieve this I have decided to for go them. After all what do they do other make it look pretty ? I don't get any other functionality from them and they can easily be replaced with text. You might have noticed too that although I'm a <a href="https://snac.smithies.me.uk?t=wayland" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Wayland</a> chic on my <a href="https://snac.smithies.me.uk?t=thinkpad" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#ThinkPad</a> I've decided to be all nostalgic and stick with Xorg on OpenBSD. I haven't yet settled on a window manager be it tiling or stacking but <a href="https://snac.smithies.me.uk?t=herbstluftwm" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#HerbstluftWM</a> and <a href="https://snac.smithies.me.uk?t=openbox" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Openbox</a> are in my sights although I'm still using the default <a href="https://snac.smithies.me.uk?t=fvwm" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Fvwm</a> right now. I have my Qutebrowser setup and aerc for my email. Printing via cups and xsane for scanning. Looking into <code>nsxiv</code> for an image viewer as the OpenBSD port of <code>imv</code> is well out of date. Yes I'm having to make small changes but once I'm finished this wee Dell Optiplex 3080 tower will be perfect for daily driving OpenBSD and I'm looking forward to learning lots more. <a href="https://snac.smithies.me.uk?t=runbsd" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#RunBSD</a><br>
Justine SmithiesBeen tinkering around with my <a href="https://snac.smithies.me.uk?t=openbsd" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#OpenBSD</a> Dell Optiplex 3080 rig learning how OpenBSD differs from say FreeBSD. I've also got X running with the default <a href="https://snac.smithies.me.uk?t=fvwm" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#FVWM</a> but I cannot decide if I want to install <a href="https://snac.smithies.me.uk?t=herbstluftwm" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#HerbstluftWM</a> or <a href="https://snac.smithies.me.uk?t=openbox" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#OpenBox</a> ? Yes I know the first is a tiling window manager but I know I can setup OpenBox to tile too with a few scripts. I think I'll have to research a tad more and decide later. For now FVWM it is and yes I'm actually liking OpenBSD if I'm honest. <a href="https://snac.smithies.me.uk?t=runbsd" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#RunBSD</a> <a href="https://snac.smithies.me.uk?t=nostalgia" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Nostalgia</a><br>
Justine SmithiesStill setting up my <a href="https://snac.smithies.me.uk?t=freebsd" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#FreeBSD</a> <a href="https://snac.smithies.me.uk?t=xorg" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Xorg</a> Desktop PC and I've got <a href="https://snac.smithies.me.uk?t=xterm" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Xterm</a> just how I like it for now with my favourite theme gruvbox. Strangely enough I'm still running the default <a href="https://snac.smithies.me.uk?t=twm" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Twm</a> as I haven't yet installed a tiling wm like <a href="https://snac.smithies.me.uk?t=herbstluftwm" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Herbstluftwm</a> . This feels like the late 80's earlier 90's and I'm having fun learning new stuff even though I used to use Xorg for years before <a href="https://snac.smithies.me.uk?t=wayland" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Wayland</a> . I mean I never ever thought I'd like Xterm but it's way more lightweight and powerfull than I ever gave it credit for.<br>
Emory<p><a href="https://soc.kvet.ch/tags/TIL" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>TIL</span></a> about a window manager called <a href="https://soc.kvet.ch/tags/Herbstluftwm" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Herbstluftwm</span></a>. (thanks, j!)</p><p>Herbstluftwm. it's german for "find your meta key", i believe.<br>edited to whack wayland hashtag </p><p><a href="https://soc.kvet.ch/tags/tilingWM" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>tilingWM</span></a> <a href="https://herbstluftwm.org/" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">herbstluftwm.org/</span><span class="invisible"></span></a></p>
Justine SmithiesOk so I've got <a href="https://snac.smithies.me.uk?t=openbsd" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#OpenBSD</a> running and installed <a href="https://snac.smithies.me.uk?t=herbstluftwm" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Herbstluftwm</a> plus <a href="https://snac.smithies.me.uk?t=qutebrowser" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Qutebrowser</a> and I even have sound. Not bad at all for a first go on this Dell Optiplex 3080 Tower I5 with UHD630 and 32Gb ram plus a 1Tb NVME. It does seems strange being back in the world of Xorg though.<br>
Justine SmithiesWell that's <a href="https://snac.smithies.me.uk?t=netbsd" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#NetBSD</a> successfully installed on this Dell Optiplex 3080 tower. Now to read the docs and explore before installing <a href="https://snac.smithies.me.uk?t=herbstluftwm" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#herbstluftwm</a><br><a href="https://snac.smithies.me.uk?t=runbsd" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#RunBSD</a><br>
Justine SmithiesIf I did give <a href="https://snac.smithies.me.uk?t=openbsd" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#OpenBSD</a> a shot and obviously went with the flow using an X based WM then I do like the look of <a href="https://snac.smithies.me.uk?t=herbstluftwm" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#HerbstluftWM</a> as it seems very scriptable too. 🤔<br>

I wish there was a Wayland version.</p>
Justine SmithiesWhy am I reading from the <a href="https://snac.smithies.me.uk?t=herbstluftwm" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Herbstluftwm</a> website ? I really like my <a href="https://snac.smithies.me.uk?t=wayland" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Wayland</a> setup with <a href="https://snac.smithies.me.uk?t=riverwm" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#RiverWM</a> and why would I even want to use <a href="https://snac.smithies.me.uk?t=x11" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#X11</a> again ??<br>

Currently I control <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/herbstluftwm" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>herbstluftwm</span></a> via my own terribly organized <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/elisp" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>elisp</span></a> wrapper scripts but would love a scheme-based alternative to <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/stumpwm" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>stumpwm</span></a>. Any plans for tiling support?</p>

thesaigoneer<p>Today is a great day to be stretching up the boundaries a bit. AutumnSky Saigon ( herbstluftwm on Universal blue) is moving over to the mini pc 🖥️ Making way for JTown (Slackware with KDE Plasma 6) on the laptop 👻 💻 Couldn&#39;t be doing this without all those great contributors, who lay the foundation for me to start chipping away at 👃🏻<br /><a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/slackware" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>slackware</span></a> <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/UniversalBlue" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>UniversalBlue</span></a> <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/KDE" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>KDE</span></a> <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/herbstluftwm" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>herbstluftwm</span></a></p>
thesaigoneer<p>Who says atomic ain&#39;t flexible? Herbstluftwm is one of those window managers I haven&#39;t tried out yet. So, started building on Ublue&#39;s Vauxite (an Xfce image that even Fedora doesn&#39;t have yet) and baked in Herbstluftwm (and Polybar, Alacritty etc.) into Vauxite-Saigon, with the BlueBuild toolkit. A Sunday very well spend!<br /><a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/Ublue" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Ublue</span></a> <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/xfce" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>xfce</span></a> <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/bluebuild" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>bluebuild</span></a> <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/herbstluftwm" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>herbstluftwm</span></a> <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/UniversalBlue" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>UniversalBlue</span></a></p>

Senioradmin<p>Well, apart from <a href="https://social.tchncs.de/tags/Sway" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Sway</span></a> it seems, there is nothing stable out there for <a href="https://social.tchncs.de/tags/Wayland" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Wayland</span></a> in terms of simple window managers.</p><p>So, it's easy to say "X11 must die" when you are using KDE or GNOME or i3, because you don't have to adapt to a new environment.</p><p>But if you are a long-term user of other window managers the switch isn't so easy. </p><p>What are users of <a href="https://social.tchncs.de/tags/icewm" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>icewm</span></a> <a href="https://social.tchncs.de/tags/fluxbox" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>fluxbox</span></a> <a href="https://social.tchncs.de/tags/openbox" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>openbox</span></a> <a href="https://social.tchncs.de/tags/bspwm" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>bspwm</span></a> <a href="https://social.tchncs.de/tags/herbstluftwm" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>herbstluftwm</span></a> <a href="https://social.tchncs.de/tags/fvwm" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>fvwm</span></a> <a href="https://social.tchncs.de/tags/jwm" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>jwm</span></a> and many others are supposed to do?</p>
