We did have an awesome #GISDay2024 at Department of Geoinformatics where we had motivated young talents at
our iDEAS:lab exploring the world of #GIS. #GISDay #universitysalzburg
What Is a Better Way To Recognise GIS Day 2024 Than My And Also Stolen Mappy Memes?

#30DayMapChallenge Day 21: Conflict
Map showing the UN Buffer Zone (Green Line) that cuts through the historic center of #Nicosia, #Cyprus. It highlights the ongoing division and the impact it has on the city's landscape.
Yesterday, after #GISDay organised by KIOS Research and Innovation Center of Excellence, we enjoyed a lovely dinner near one of the checkpoints.
The map was created in #QGIS using the Dark Matter vector tile from MapTiler via the MapTiler plugin.
On this annual 48 hours of #GIS - aka #GISday + #PostGISday, remember:
...when you arrange a meeting with your friendly neighbourhood independent geospatial SME - the next thing you do is go to their website and hit the "pay me" button.
In fact, do this anytime you pick up the phone or expect an email response. Unless you've negotiated a pro bono agreement beforehand.
Just like your lawyer or accountant.
This is essential for building a strong and diverse geospatial community!
Thanks
because it is #GISday / #PostGISDay - idk 48 hours of geostuff - here's my Geospatial Origin Story - mapping the hardest place to map on Earth, with #lidar - and pioneering usage of #SfM photogrammetry, both combined with ground and under-ice observations. Then making a cool RevealJS presentation for my defence / final seminar. Enjoy!
With #GISDay wrapping up, I just wanted to share the news that #IDRISI will be free starting December 2nd. IDRISI was the first #GIS software I learned and it has great tools for environmental modeling. https://www.clarku.edu/centers/geospatial-analytics/2024/08/27/announcement-terrset-liberagis/
Happy GIS Day from BetaNYC!
Today, we celebrate the power of maps to drive change and amplify voices. Dive into Naeema’s inspiring blog post, “Justice is in the Mapping,” and learn how GIS empowers communities for environmental justice.

You can explore the full 1:63k series in the GeoPortal here: https://bit.ly/41fjDdV
To learn more about the Historical Topographic Maps Digitization Project, visit the project website here: https://ocul.on.ca/topomaps/
This year, we’ve put together a feature about the 1:63k series! If you’re curious about where you might have found lighthouses, cheese factories, orchards, & sleigh roads back in the 1920s and 30s, take a minute to explore: https://bit.ly/3YXjGIn
Spot the cheese factory on the map below!
Last year we shared an animation created by one of our GIS Developers, Anugra Shah, showing changes to the Port Lands of Toronto over time using the 1:50k topographic maps series. If you missed the animation last year, check it out below!
The 1:63k index series was produced between 1906-1953 & includes nearly 500 individual map sheets for Ontario. These maps provide detailed geographic information about Ontario, often showing infrastructural developments & environmental changes over time.
Happy #GISDay2024!
Our historical topographic maps 1:63k index is one of our most popular collections year after year. These georeferenced maps show both natural and man-made features such as relief, roads, railways, waterways, bridges, lighthouses, mills, forests, & more.
#30DayMapChallenge day 20 #OpenStreetMap
The first thing that came to my mind according today's theme was to use the #prettymaps library.
Prettymaps is a Python library which allows to quickly draw pretty looking maps :) The data used to map creation by this tool comes from OpenStreetMap. User can cutomize the layout in many ways. I encourage you to give it a try.
Happy #gisday!
In honor of #GISday I'd like to shout out what used to be the chaos of U.S. Postal Service's map showing possible challenges to mail delivery... alas, it’s much more orderly now ( https://uspstools.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=1fc1c26bb31246b39087606c65b83020 ), this screenshot is from January 2023.
Happy #GISDay
Spatial research is great with #opensource software such as @qgis.fosstodon.org.ap.brid.gy, but to make it #reproducible #rstats can be very helpful, for example in relation to transport of wood in the Roman period: https://www.researchgate.net/publication/384108657_Securing_transport_of_wood_over_water_on_the_Roman_Rhine, reproducible code: https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.7581545
Neste #GISDay facémonos eco desta nova de @gciencia: De Altri a Ence: os oito conflitos ambientais en Galicia dos que alerta un mapa europeo
