The mob burned down their restaurant in the night: these people are enemies now. Tony's father died in the fire. </p><p>Tony, the immigrant who had just signed up to join the British army to fight Hitler, and who had asked Samantha whether she would write to him, sits at the bench below the town's war memorial, the burned-down house behind him.
