the roamer<p>Proper drama. Foyle's War, S1E3, A Lesson in Murder. At the very end, ca 1:34.</p><p>They are Italians who have lived in England for many years. Yesterday Italy declared war. The mob burned down their restaurant in the night: these people are enemies now. Tony's father died in the fire. </p><p>Tony, the immigrant who had just signed up to join the British army to fight Hitler, and who had asked Samantha whether she would write to him, sits at the bench below the town's war memorial, the burned-down house behind him. He gets up to speak to Foyle.</p><p>Tony Luciano: "What sort of world is this, Mr Foyle?" </p><p>[Foyle's face shows pain, he remains speechless but he nods.]</p><p>Tony walks away. </p><p>Samantha Stewart calls after him, "Tony ...", but he does not look back.</p><p>Samantha Stewart to Foyle: "I don't know what to say."</p><p>Foyle (barely audible), his face still distorted in pain: "Neither do I." </p><p><a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/FoylesWar" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>FoylesWar</span></a> <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/speechlessness" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>speechlessness</span></a> </p><p><a href="https://www.itv.com/watch/foyles-war/25410/322070" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">itv.com/watch/foyles-war/25410</span><span class="invisible">/322070</span></a></p>
the roamer<p>Re-watching Foyle's War. (In the UK, currently available free on ITV).</p><p>Impeccable. Flawless. Most TV pieces age, some fast, some gradually, and when we re-watch them 5, 10, 20 years later, they are ... a bit embarrassing. We ask ourselves who we were when we saw them and enjoyed them when they first showed.</p><p>Not here. Foyle's War is still as fresh today as when it was shown first. </p><p>Chiefly, of course, because of the wonderful Michael Kitchen, the true master of the raised eyebrow.</p><p><a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/FoylesWar" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>FoylesWar</span></a> <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/MichaelKitchen" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>MichaelKitchen</span></a></p>
Peter Schweighofer<p>I’ve immersed myself in British TV mysteries lately as a diverting relief to &lt;waves hand&gt; all this. <a href="https://dice.camp/tags/Poirot" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Poirot</span></a>, Father Brown, Midsomer Murders, <a href="https://dice.camp/tags/MissFisher" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>MissFisher</span></a> (British-adjacent). But <a href="https://dice.camp/tags/FoylesWar" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>FoylesWar</span></a> is my favorite. I love the period and Michael Kitchen’s poignant performance (with an amazing supporting cast).</p><p>Most I watch on the local PBS stations</p>
Chris Spivey (Author)<p>Friends told us about <a href="https://dice.camp/tags/FoylesWar" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>FoylesWar</span></a> and we’ve been enjoying it. The show had a rocky start but soon joined out regular viewing line up. The total lack of Black people is an issue for me and in season 7, we have an episode focused on Black soldiers. Let’s see how it does for a 2013 show.</p>
Brian Jopek<p>The latest TV show binge. It’s actually quite good and perfect to watch while drinking my tea. <br><a href="https://mastodon.world/tags/FoylesWar" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>FoylesWar</span></a> <br><a href="https://mastodon.world/tags/MusicOfMastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>MusicOfMastodon</span></a> </p><p><a href="https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ovxxx9hcj1w" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">m.youtube.com/watch?v=ovxxx9hc</span><span class="invisible">j1w</span></a></p>
theaack<p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://sfba.social/@eecastro" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">@<span>eecastro</span></a></span> Great show! Have watched through a couple times over the years, and just started again. 3 episodes in and it is hitting even harder than it did a few years ago. Should be required viewing. <a href="https://mas.to/tags/FoylesWar" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>FoylesWar</span></a></p>
Nigel<p>Watched a repeat of (the excellent) <a href="https://musicians.today/tags/foyleswar" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>foyleswar</span></a> and it was the one where there's a n*zi obsessed son of a 'businessman' (one who is happy to profit from both sides). The abhorrent son is played by one Lawrence Fox. In light of what transpired in the years since then, is it a case of 'the method' acting gone tragically wrong? Or just some sort of irony...</p>

Larry Nemecek :verified:<p>Feeling like it’s the end of an era tonight. <br>Just finished the finale of <a href="https://mastodon.fraize.com/tags/FoylesWar" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>FoylesWar</span></a>, a bittersweet moment I feel like I rarely have anymore. Every other night the past two months, it’s been: Eight series, 28 mini-movies, ingenious crime plotting, wartime era. Can’t believe it took us 20 years to discover, but I’ll cherish the delay.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.fraize.com/tags/hoopla" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>hoopla</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.fraize.com/tags/notstartrek" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>notstartrek</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.fraize.com/tags/butitis" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>butitis</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.fraize.com/tags/wartimedrama" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>wartimedrama</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.fraize.com/tags/periodcops" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>periodcops</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.fraize.com/tags/michaelkitchen" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>michaelkitchen</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.fraize.com/tags/perioddrama" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>perioddrama</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.fraize.com/tags/drywit" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>drywit</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.fraize.com/tags/foyle" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>foyle</span></a></p>
