When you're trying to move around, seated in a chair on wheels, it's easier to move while moving _*BACKWARD*_.
This makes me believe that the car of the #Flintstones was incredibly inefficient. Think about it, moving _forward_ in a seat-with-wheels is hard, while moving backward is easy.
For the Flintstones, it would therefore be a lot more efficient if they had a single driver facing #forward and breaking, and the passengers facing #backward and providing the power to move the #vehicle.

"Fred, what is it now?" Wilma rolled her eyes.

"It's Barney." he said, "He's after me pebbles."

"Yes, yes, your cereal," she rolled her eyes more, "I don't understand why you don't just give him some."

"No Wilma. He's not after cereal. He's after my PEBBLES." he pointed down to his groin.

Outside, Barney had reached the front gate, his eyes glowing red with whatever madness had possessed him. "Come on Fred, Im gonna eat yer pebbles, heh heh... No future son for you... Gonna make you the last of the Flintstone name... The Rubble clan will feel the sweet victory of your pebbles sliding down my gullet!"
