A quotation from Teddy Roosevelt

A caustic observer once remarked that when Dr. Johnson spoke of patriotism as the last refuge of a scoundrel, “he was ignorant of the infinite possibility contained in the word ‘reform.'”

Theodore Roosevelt (1858-1919) American politician, statesman, conservationist, writer, US President (1901-1909)
Essay (1900-06), “Latitude and Longitude Among Reformers,” The Century Magazine, Vol. 60, No. 2

A beautiful building in #Lausanne, Switzerland. In the late 1800s, the city started to expand beyond its medieval core. People wanted space and air, in contrast to the narrow streets of the central area, and the typical building form became that of urban villas: isolated buildings of about four stories, surrounded by a garden. The owner would often live on the lower floors, while the upper floors were rented out. #architecture #facade #history #urbanshape

A quotation from The Bible

And when you fast, do not put on a sad face as the hypocrites do. They neglect their appearance so that everyone will see that they are fasting. I assure you, they have already been paid in full. When you go without food, wash your face and comb your hair, so that others cannot know that you are fasting — only your Father, who is unseen, will know. And your Father, who sees what you do in private, will reward you.

A typical working-class residential building from the early 1970s, located in the southeast of #Rome. The neighborhood is dense, and most structures are built with a reinforced concrete frame filled with brickwork. The frame remains visible, structuring the façade. These buildings were intended to be inexpensive, but I believe this particular example is quite good. Details such as the bay windows, stone base, and protruding beams provide dignity with limited means. #architecture #facade

A quotation from Eric Hoffer

If what we profess is not an organic part of our understanding, we are likely to profess it with vehemence and intolerance. Intolerance is the “Do Not Touch” sign on something that cannot bear touching. We do not mind having our hair ruffled, but we will not tolerate any familiarity with the toupee which covers our baldness.

Eric Hoffer (1902-1983) American writer, philosopher, longshoreman
Passionate State of Mind, Aphorism 62 (1955)
