La taille de la nouvelle zone volcanique du Sundhnúkur, incluant les 9 dernières éruptions (18 décembre 2023 - 16 juillet 2025) mesure presque 12,5 km de long.
Volume total de lave déversé : environ 26.8 million de mètres cube
Superficie du nouveau champ de lave : environ 3,3 km2
Débit moyen pour la période 18-23 juillet : 12 m3 de lave par seconde
Il reste un cratère actif et le soleil devrait faire son grand retour ce dimanche, après plusieurs jours plongés dans la grisaille !

The #eruption in #Iceland is still ongoing but now another factor has emerged - #vog.
Vog is air pollution formed when gases and particles emitted by an erupting #volcano react with oxygen and moisture in the presence of sunlight. The word is a portmanteau of the words "volcanic" and "smog."
The principal components are water vapour (H₂O), carbon dioxide (CO₂), sulphur dioxide (SO₂), and hydrogen sulphide (H₂S).
High level sulphides create a blue haze, filtering the sunlight to a lurid orange.

Alors, cette journée ? Je ne suis finalement pas allé voir si les parkings rando lava étaient ouverts pour 2 raisons :
1) Grasse matinée (grosse semaine de travail dans les pattes)
2) Grosse pollution atmosphérique sur l'agglomération de Reykjavík : on ne voyait PAS DU TOUT les paysages environnants (massif de L'Esja, début du Hvalfjörður, Akrafjall). J'ose pas imaginer l'état du ciel près de la faille. Routes assez désertes et gorge qui pique.
De mémoire, aucune autre éruption ne nous avait autant pollué les alentours.

Good news is that this is on the northern end of the area. Lava is flowing to the east. So the towns and other industructure is safe.
L'éruption se poursuit tranquillement et l'accès à Grindavik a été rouvert hier.
En serait-il de même pour les parking rando lava ? Bien envie de tenter le coup pour grimper le Fagradalsfjall et observer les derniers cratères actifs, voire le longer pour m'approcher de la nouvelle coulée...
