Re-reading Night, completely unrelated to anything that may be going on, I'm sure. I'm going through the Preface to the New Translation (2006) and it's haunting. There is a line that is now burned into my brain:
"Those who kept silent yesterday will remain silent tomorrow."
In practice, the ethical stance often depends on the context & the stakes involved. Remaining neutral or silent in the face of injustice allows oppressive systems to persist. Injustice thrives on inaction. Silence signals complicity.
But you can also argue that there are situations where neutrality might be necessary or strategic, such as voiding escalation & preserving peace.
In certain situations it may enable mediation or diplomacy.
Useless quote for 5 Nov:
"Human beings can be beautiful or more beautiful, they can be fat or skinny, they can be right or wrong, but illegal?
How can a human being be illegal?"
~ Elie Wiesel, "The Refugee" in "CrossCurrents" Vol. 34, No. 4 (Winter 1984-5), pp. 385-390
Apropos the #PressIsComplicit fracas over the Los Angeles Times and Washington Post suddenly deciding that endorsing candidates goes beyond the purview of EDITORIAL BOARDS (whose entire schtick is to have oppinions), we should all perhaps rememeber:
"To learn means to accept the postulate that life did not begin at my birth. Others have been here before me, and I walk in their footsteps. The books I have read were composed by generations of fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, teachers and disciples. I am the sum total of their experiences, their quests. And so are you." — Elie Wiesel — — — #ElieWiesel #quote #quotes #learn #ancestors #legacy #education #past #books #experiences#
"At a talk in Brooklyn [in 1985, Primo] Levi, asked for his opinion on Middle East politics, started to say that ‘Israel was a mistake in historical terms.’ An uproar ensued, and the moderator had to halt the meeting."

Wiesel spent last week listening to #Uyghur Muslim survivors of Chinese repression and was horrified by the stories. From forced sterilization to physical intimidation to murder, Wiesel says the Chinese government is responsible for these horrific acts, and the #ElieWiesel Foundation wants to get these stories out. He said the move is similar to the works of his father, who often tried to draw attention to genocide and repression in #Rwanda and the former Soviet Union.

#ElieWiesel says he doesn't approve of Palestine's methods cos violence is never the answer. Israel will cooperate, his words. How he'd be surprised to learn of Israel today, of the way it behaves, less than one century later, in a similar fashion as Nazi Germany? I didn't like his book. Its bite sized bits of text annoy me. His prose is horrendous, his testimony nothing I haven't read before, his faith in god irritating. But it's about the #Holocaust, you have to like it! Why? #night #books

When a person doesn’t have gratitude, something is missing in his or her humanity. A person can almost be defined by his or her attitude toward gratitude. - (Elie Wiesel)
Are we defined by our attitude toward gratitude? Elie Wiesel believed so. Share a moment when gratitude made a difference in your life.
According to #ElieWiesel the #opposite of #love is not #hate but rather #indifference or #apathy
"There are victories of the soul and spirit. Sometimes, even if you lose, you win."

"When the last [holocaust survivor] will be gone, a page will be turned. That’s what I say wherever I go, I say to young people to be a witness is to become one, because now you are our witnesses." -Elie Wiesel, speaking to Moment Editor Nadine Epstein in 2013. https://momentmag.com/heart-to-heart-with-elie-wiesel/
“The opposite of love is not hate, it's indifference. The opposite of art is not ugliness, it's indifference. The opposite of faith is not heresy, it's indifference. And the opposite of life is not death, it's indifference.” #ElieWiesel
