A handsome fly (Lucilia?) lapping at sap flowing down the side of a sugar maple. This little rivulet attracted many flies and wasps looking for a treat in an otherwise still wintery landscape. Spring is coming!

Mascle de Bibio marci, dípter de la família Bibionidae, conegut com a mosca de març. Les larves es desenvolupen al sòl, on s'alimenten de matèria orgànica en descomposició. Una espècie comuna a Europa, on es troba en prats, boscos oberts i zones agrícoles. Tot i el seu aspecte de mosca voluminosa, és inofensiva per als humans.

The "ugly" maggots are always hidden away, into soil. Whereas adults are beautiful and sleek, and are quite easy to recognise; with their distribution being worldwide almost certainly there are some near where you are. See a few that I've spotted:
