A handsome fly (Lucilia?) lapping at sap flowing down the side of a sugar maple. This little rivulet attracted many flies and wasps looking for a treat in an otherwise still wintery landscape. Spring is coming!

We peek around a chunk of bark to spy on a fly who's clinging, head down, to the side of a sugar maple's trunk. The fly is in bright, glaring winter sunlight that makes the bark it stands on look like ashes. The fly's body is shiny metallic green and its eyes are garnet red ovals. Sparse black bristles sweep up and back from its shoulders. Its cellophane wings have amber veins.

#BREAKING: the witch hazel flowers are fully unfurled. These flies are taking advantage—I was surprised to see them out and about!

A stout housefly-type fly (slightly out of focus) on a witch hazel flower, which has long, thin saffron-yellow petals around a glossy dark red central bit, sprouting from a thin bare branch.

A shiny metallic dark blue fly on a cluster of witch hazel flowers.

The fly clinging to one thin petal, ventral side facing the camera, so you can see its weird little fly face is dusted with yellow pollen.

Una espècie comuna a Europa, on es troba en prats, boscos oberts i zones agrícoles. Tot i el seu aspecte de mosca voluminosa, és inofensiva per als humans.

A Bee Fly, genus Ligyra spotted at Coney Island, Singapore on 10 Nov 2024. The posture of the wings probably give the impression that it is a bee.

A fly with a dark body with orange stripes. The wings are held in a swept back position, giving it the appearance of a bee. The front part of the wings are dark, while the rear is transparent.

quadratische collage von 4 quadratischen bildern einer rosa blume mit gelber mitte in der eine schwebfliege sitzt. in der oberen reihe zwei mal nur leicht unterschiedlich so, dass die ganze blüte ins bild passt, in der unteren reihe zweimal immer dichter ran gezoomt, das letzte ist eine nahaufnahme, makro. im aus satt-gelben blütenstempeln und/oder staubgefäßen aufgebauten und von leuchtend rosa blütenblättern umgebenen blütenkorbboden sitzt eine schwebfliege mit sauber auf dem rücken übereinandergelegten transparenten flügeln durch die man schön die schwarz-gelben streifen auf dem hinterleib sehen kann, die die harmlose fliege wie eine wehrhafte biene oder wespe erscheinen lassen.

Las típulas o zancudos son enormes dípteros de vuelo muy torpe que se suelen perseguir con saña. No obstante, como se aprecia en las fotos, carecen de aparato bucal chupador con el que nos puedan picar. Si se cuela alguno en casa, cógelo sin miedo entre las manos y sácalo fuera.

Dung flies. God love 'em. The larvae of most species don't actually eat the dung, but rather the larvae of other flies that are eating the dung. Like a lethal game of maggot tag in a pile of shit.
