from #TheGuardian #Guardian

Tue 19 Aug 2025 21.22 EDT

Benjamin Marcelo Guerrero-Cruz was supposed to be starting his senior year of high school at Reseda charter high school this month. But just days after his 18th birthday, masked Ice agents detained him as he walking his dog in the #LosAngeles neighborhood of Van Nuys in what his family described as a kidnapping.

The agents allowed his dog to run loose, and treated Guerrero-Cruz like a criminal and joked while arresting him, his family said in a GoFundMe.

I spent decades at Columbia. I’m withdrawing my fall course due to its deal with #Trump
Rashid Khalidi

from #TheGuardian #Guardian
Fri 1 Aug 2025 06.00 EDT

Columbia’s capitulation has turned a #university that was once a site of free inquiry and learning into a shadow of its former self, an-anti university, a gated security zone with electronic entry controls, a place of fear and loathing, where faculty and students are told from on high what they can teach and say, under penalty of severe sanctions. Disgracefully, all of this is being done to cover up one of the greatest crimes of this century, the ongoing genocide in #Gaza, a crime in which #Columbia’s leadership is now fully complicit.

Prominent historian cancels course at Columbia University over Trump deal

#RashidKhalidi, in open letter published by #Guardian, accuses university of ‘capitulating’ with $200m settlement

from #TheGuardian
Dani Anguiano
Fri 1 Aug 2025 06.00 EDT

“Although I have retired, I was scheduled to teach a large lecture course on this topic in the fall as a “special lecturer” but I cannot do so under the conditions #Columbia has accepted by capitulating to the #Trump administration in June,” Khalidi wrote.

Columbia announced last week that it would pay more than $200m in a settlement with the federal government after the White House claimed the university failed to adequately address alleged antisemitism on campus amid protests over the #Israel-#Gaza war, and threatened to pull significant funding.

She fled Cuba for asylum – then was snatched from a US immigration courtroom

Jenny, 25, entered the US legally, but #ICE agents arrested her after a hearing, part of a growing trend of court detentions

from #TheGuardian
Sat 26 Jul 2025 05.00 EDT

[I support Cuba, but that is not the issue here. Due process is.]

But reporting by the #Guardian has uncovered how Ice is casting a far wider net for its #immigration court arrests and appears also to be targeting people such as Jenny whose cases are ongoing and have not been dismissed. The agency is also snatching up court attendees who have clearly been in the US for longer than two years – the maximum timeframe that according to #US law determines whether someone can be placed in expedited removal – as well as those who have a pathway to remain in the country legally.

A Pattern of Violence

Documenting #ICE Agents’ Brutal Use of Force in LA Immigration Raids

from #TheIntercept
Jonah Valdez
July 7 2025, 6:00 a.m.

"Agents have aimed firearms and sprayed chemical irritants at onlookers and protesters. They have launched tear gas and flash bang grenades into crowds. They have beaten the people they detain, struck them with batons, and restrained them face down in a prone position, pressing them into the pavement and restricting their abilities to breathe.

Agents often deployed these violent tactics against the targets of #immigration raids — people they presumed to be #undocumented #immigrants. In the majority of cases reviewed for this story, federal agents used force against U.S. citizens who were attempting to document raids or intervene by putting their bodies between the agents and their neighbors."

Los Angeles: Thousands Denounce ICE Raids in July 4 Protest

from #WorldOutlook
July 5, 2025

"The article below first appeared in the #LosAngeles Times on July 5, 2025. The protest the article describes was a fitting way to mark #US Independence Day, given the #Trump administration’s intensified workplace raids and #deportations of undocumented #immigrants. L.A. has been the epicenter of many such protests over the last month since the White House picked the city to launch its aggressive dragnet, carried out by Immigration and Customs Enforcement #(ICE) agents, targeting millions of workers across the country.

As a recent article published by the #WashingtonPost revealed, ICE arrests have more than doubled since Trump took office in January, compared to the same period last year."

"The #NewYorkTimes reported that an internal email was sent on Thursday by Tatum King, a senior official with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (#ICE), to regional department leaders at Homeland Security Investigations, directing them to stop workplace #immigration enforcement actions unless related to criminal investigations.

“Effective today, please hold on all work site enforcement investigations/operations on agriculture (including aquaculture and meat packing plants), restaurants and operating hotels,” King wrote in the guidance, according to the outlet."

Judge says US effort to deport Mahmoud Khalil on foreign policy grounds is likely unconstitutional

NEW YORK (AP) — A federal judge said the #Trump administration’s effort to deport #MahmoudKhalil because of his pro-#Palestinian activism at #ColumbiaUniversity likely violates the #Constitution.

In a lengthy order issued Wednesday, Judge Michael Farbiarz wrote the government’s primary justification for removing Khalil — that his beliefs may pose a threat to U.S. foreign policy — could open the door to vague and arbitrary enforcement.

‘Don’t yap to cops’: why Hasan Piker’s US customs story kicked off a backlash

from #TheGuardian #Guardian
Julia Carrie Wong
Sat 17 May 2025 09.00 EDT

"When #HasanPiker was stopped and questioned about his political views by US Customs and Border Protection (#CBP) agents at Chicago’s O’Hare airport last Sunday, the popular leftwing streamer thought he knew exactly what their motive was. “Obviously the reason for why they’re doing that is, I think, to try to create an environment of fear,” he told his legion of fans on a Twitch stream in which he described his ordeal. “To try to get people like myself … to shut the fuck up.”

But the decision by Piker – a 33-year-old US citizen – to entertain the agents’ questions for nearly two hours has some of the self-described socialist’s fans and allies questioning why he didn’t do just that."
