These are the strategies that blind people are told to use to enhance their employability and advocate for more inclusive workplaces:

1. Skill Development: Engaging in specialized training programs, like those offered by organizations like Blind in Business, can help blind individuals develop the skills needed for their desired careers.

2. Assistive Technology: Becoming proficient in using assistive technologies, such as screen readers and braille displays, can significantly improve job performance. The Access to Work program provides support for obtaining necessary equipment.

3. Networking and Mentorship: Building a professional network and connecting with mentors in the field can provide valuable guidance, support, and career opportunities.

4. Advocacy and Self-Advocacy: Educating employers about the capabilities of blind people and the benefits of a diverse workforce is crucial. Resources like the RNIB's employer guide can help dispel misconceptions.

5. Understanding Legal Rights: Knowledge of legal protections under the Equality Act 2010 empowers blind individuals to advocate for themselves against discrimination.

6. Seeking Support Services: Organizations like Blind Ambition offer specialized training and support services to empower blind and disabled individuals in their career journeys.

By taking a proactive approach and utilizing these strategies, blind people are told they will enhance their employability and contribute to creating more inclusive work environments in the UK.

How’s it going for you? Have you got a job? If not, have you tried to get one? If so, how many times?

I’m sure you, like me, haven’t been discriminated against since 1995.

Despite the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) being in effect for three decades, the employment rate for blind and partially sighted people in the UK remains alarmingly low. Several factors contribute to this issue:

1. Employer Attitudes and Misconceptions: Many employers harbour concerns about the perceived costs and challenges of recruiting visually impaired employees. A report by the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) found that 36% of blind and partially sighted people identify inaccessible recruitment processes as a significant barrier to employment.

2. Inadequate Support and Training: There is a lack of comprehensive support systems to assist visually impaired individuals in acquiring necessary skills and accessing employment opportunities. This includes insufficient vocational training tailored to their needs and limited availability of assistive technologies.

3. Systemic Barriers: Beyond employer attitudes, systemic issues such as limited public transportation and workplaces, as well as difficulties accessing information in accessible formats, further hinder employment prospects for visually impaired people.

4. Enforcement Challenges: While the DDA prohibits discrimination, enforcing these provisions can be challenging. Many individuals may be unaware of their rights or lack the resources to pursue legal action against discriminatory practices.

Addressing these challenges requires a multifaceted approach, including raising awareness among employers, enhancing support services, improving accessibility, and strengthening enforcement mechanisms to ensure that anti-discrimination laws translate into tangible employment opportunities for blind and partially sighted people.

In the United Kingdom, as many as 90% of working age blind or visually impaired people are unemployed. Many, but not all, would like to work. Next year it will be thirty years since the introduction of the Disability Discrimination Act, which makes discriminating against a job applicant on the grounds of disability illegal – but the unemployment rate was also 90% in 1995.

Wy do you think 30 years of anti-discrimination legislation has failed to move the dial on this lack of opportunity among blind and visually impaired people?
