MaaritBackpacking trip in 2008 (November/December)<br>
For our final destination in 2008 we spent a month in Cuba. Our journey took us from Havanna to Santiago de Cuba to Trinidad to Cienfuegos and finally for the last days of our journey to Varadero.<br>
<br>
Cuba was an interesting country and full of contradictions. Tourists were ripped off from all pennies possible and also we were denied the use of local bus companies etc. But we met some wonderful people too when we stayed in casa particulares (rooms for rent in people's houses) and ate in paladares (restaurants kept by locals).<br>
<br>
Cars and scenery were beautiful, food in paladares and casa particulares was good. Weather wonderful. <br>
<br>
We went to Varadero to an all inclusive resort for the last 5 days of our journey just to relax before going back home and experienced our first actual culture shock. The contradiction was too massive for all the places we had been in and the lifestyle we had had for the last 9 months that it was messing with our heads. Luckily we realised what was going on and were able to put things in perspective.<br>

Then, towards the end of it I realised that bizarro dimension was called "The United States of America"</p><p>Really amusing, if perhaps predictably in-character, how MP3 CDs weren't -- A thing -- Over there. Described as this niche feature of some players that no one really noticed or cared about.</p><p>They were the default media format over here in Brazil for some 15 years, until optical media started being phased out everywhere in the mid 10s.</p><p>.... And yes, 99.99% of them were pirated af, burned on the shops' own backroom (or, of course, at home if you were tech-y like I was) from tunes downloaded from eMule/Kazaa/etc. </p><p>So it does make sense it never really ~happened~ in the US.
