New book coming!
As always, China Mieville says interesting and thought-provoking things about science fiction, politics, tech, and the world in general in this interview. Definitely worth reading!
Endlich gehe ich Teil 2 der #BasLag Trilogie an. Bin gespannt, ob 'The Scar' mich genauso fesselt, wie vor ca. 10 Jahren 'Perdido Street Station'. Verspüre Vorfreude :)

Familia eta komunitate mota alternatiboak ZiFian
Zientzia-fikzioak familia eta komunitate mota ugari aztertu ditu, eredu tradizionalei aurre eginez eta gizarte alternatiboak irudikatuz. Hauek dira orainaldian inspirazio iturri izan daitezkeen adibideetako batzuk:
Ursula K. Le Guinen esperimentu komunitarioak
Le Guinek familia eta komunitate egitura ezberdinak aztertu zituen bere obran. The Dispossessed eleberrian, gizarte anarkista bat aurkezten du Anarres planetan, non familia biologikoak ez duen hainbesteko garrantzirik, eta antolakuntza kolektiboagoa den. The Left Hand of Darkness lanean, Gueden planetako biztanleak androginoak dira eta sexua alda dezakete; ondorioz, familia-antolaketa guztiz desberdina da, genero-rol finkorik gabea. The Word for World Is Forest (Oihan hitzean mundua bezala euskaratua) eleberrian, gizartea kooperazioan eta indarkeriarik ezan oinarritzen da. Bertan, familia nuklear tradizionalik ez dago, haurren hazkuntza komunala da, eta guraso-rolak ez daude modu hertsian definituta.
Diamond Age-ko phyle-ak (Neal Stephenson)
Eleberri honetan, Stephensonek phyle kontzeptua aurkezten du: lurralde edo ahaidetasun biologikoaren ordez, balioen, interesen edo kulturaren arabera antolatutako komunitate globalak. Phyle-ak klan moderno gisa funtzionatzen dute, kideei hezkuntza, segurtasuna eta egonkortasuna eskainiz, eta mundu postnazional bateko gizarte-antolaketa modu nagusia bihurtzen dira.
Embassytown-eko txanda-gurasoak (China Miéville)
Eleberriak shiftparents (txanda-gurasoak) kontzeptua aurkezten du, familia-egitura ez-konbentzionala, non hainbat guraso-figurak gurasotasuna partekatzen duten. Eredu horrek familia nuklear tradizionalaren aurrean babes komunitarioko eta malgutasunezko eredu bat proposatzen du, giza eta estralurtarren arteko gizarte-harremanak irudikatuz. Hizkuntzak ere paper zentrala du nobelan.
Binti tribua (Nnedi Okorafor)
Binti eleberriko protagonista Lurreko Himba komunitate batetik dator, familia-lotura sendoak eta tradizioan oinarritutako egitura mantentzen dituenetik. Bere bidaian zehar, beste komunitate-forma batzuekin egiten du topo, baita izaki estralurtarrekin ere, elkar-ulermenean eta eraldaketan oinarritutako ahaidetasun sinbiotiko mota bat garatuz.
The Fifth Season-eko comm-ak (N.K. Jemisin)
Comm bakoitzak komunitate estu bat bezala funtzionatzen du, non kide bakoitzak zeregin zehatz bat duen. Egitura hau funtsezkoa da taldearen biziraupenerako, batez ere baldintza apokaliptikoetan. Harreman aniztasun handia dago, eta Jemisinek kasten eta botere-harremanen inguruko lanketa sakona egiten du nobelan.
Hauek dira adibide batzuk; asko utzi ditut bidean. Besterik ezagutuz gero, animatu eta iruzkinetan edo Mastodon bidez erantzun.

I fell down the rabbit hole of sci-fi Wikipedia this boring Saturday, which among other things got me thinking about why we never hear about '00s wunderkind #ChinaMieville anymore. Turns out that's because he hasn't written a new novel in almost ten years at this point, instead spending the last decade penning a series of pro-communism nonfiction books, then inexplicably this year publishing a prose adaptation of Keanu Reeves' awful BRZRKR comic book.
Just finished The City & The City by China Miéville. Wow! It's been a while since I read a book that I enjoyed this much. The speculative fiction aspect of it had just the right balance of interesting philosophy and unexplained mystery. I can imagine it not being a book for just anyone, but reading has been generally less and less enjoyable for me lately, and this strange book fit me just right.

I'm almost certain that this is what China Miéville had in mind when conceptualising the Slake Moth in Perdido Street Station.
Funny to read Neal Stephenson's "Polostan" after recently reading China Miéville's "October".
This week's book:
The book of elsewhere
by China Miéville (and Keanu Reeves, for licencing purposes)
Picked up 2nd hand this spectacularly covered collection of short stories by high profile authors, edited by #MichaelChabon . The selection is intended to explore the boundary of literary fiction and genre fiction (in practice, largely horror). Despite the big names it's mostly pretty minor work. #ChinaMiéville 's story of feral streets moving through London (which I've read before in a Miéville collection) is the strongest story. #Bookstodon @bookstodon
A collaboration between #KeanuReeves and #ChinaMiéville (inspired by Reeves's comic 'BRZRKR') seems a random thing, but I very much enjoyed this violent #fantasy , written across a variety of times, voices, and even fonts, of an 80,000 year old immortal warrior, his pig frenemy, and the various cults formed for or against them @bookstodon #bookstodon #FinishedReading

I was very excited to read 'The Book of elsewhere' by Keanu Reeves and China Miéville, having waited a long time for some new fiction from Miéville. I was not disappointed. I found Reeves's comic, of which this is an adaptation, extremely mid, but this novel is brilliant.

The vessel was a curious affair, a pot of white enameled tin fitted into a similar tin plate, like a cup and saucer for a giant. The pot held a large amount of clear, clean, potable-looking water, as much as half a gallon. Clean water, water of any kind, is in scarce supply in Haiti, and this lack is at the bottom of many problems: communicable diseases, environmental deterioration, starvation. For such reasons, the ceremony of jété dlo was a genuine, terrible sacrifice—the unconditional offering of the most valuable thing you possessed. I took the pot and poured water three times on the ground before each portal, and when I had completed the circuit, I poured what was left on the spot of earth where I had previously been sitting. This too was an offering to Legba, and I poured in a counterclockwise circle, drawing the vévé for my journey in water on the ground.
Shehadeh distinguishes three ways of responding to occupation. The first is that of “blind hate,” the second, “mute submission.” To the captive population, the first way is that of the freedom fighter, the second, that of the quisling. To the conqueror, the first way is that of the terrorist, the second, that of the moderate. The paymasters keep to the rhetoric of the conqueror, naturally. What then is “the third way”? That is the way of the Samid, “the steadfast one,” who watches his home turned into a prison. “You, Samid, choose to stay in that prison, because it is your home, and because you fear that if you leave, your jailer will not allow you to return. Living like this, you must constantly resist the twin temptations of either acquiescing in the jailer’s plan in numb despair, or becoming crazed by consuming hatred for your jailer and yourself, the prisoner.” To be Samid...
It was normal and usual for a foreigner, a blan, to go through a period of anxiety and fear while planning a trip to Haiti. Perhaps it was even sensible. For Haitians of the diaspora, the risk of visiting their country was much greater, but I had taken to observing certain Haitian practices before I […]
For those curious about the #KeanuReeves and #ChinaMieville novel, “The Book of Elsewhere”, it’s really quite good!
Descriptions say it’s set in the same world as Reeves’ BRZRKR comic. I’ve still only read the first few issues of BRZRKR so I don’t know just how much crossover there is, but it’s the same main character anyway. I don’t think reading the comics first (or after) is necessary to enjoy the book, but I’ll at least be getting the rest of the comic series now.
