En effet, il démissionna de son poste d’ambassadeur à <a class="hashtag" href="https://social.alternativebit.fr/tag/belgrade" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Belgrade</a> le 17 juin 1940, pour protester contre la demande d’armistice maquillée en « demande des conditions d’armistice » par le radical pronazi (et très américanophile) <a class="hashtag" href="https://social.alternativebit.fr/tag/chautemps" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Chautemps</a>, complice de <a class="hashtag" href="https://social.alternativebit.fr/tag/pétain" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Pétain</a>. Dans la troisième semaine de septembre 1944, <a class="hashtag" href="https://social.alternativebit.fr/tag/degaulle" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#DeGaulle</a> le nomma secrétaire général du Quai d’Orsay. Il s’agit de la fameuse « <a class="hashtag" href="https://social.alternativebit.fr/tag/synarchie" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#synarchie</a> », sorte de société secrète groupant un petit nombre d’industriels — polytechniciens, hommes de banque, inspecteurs des Finances — qui, les uns et les autres, aspiraient sur des bases antiparlementaires, sinon à la reprise du pouvoir, du moins à la prise des leviers de commande économiques du pays. […] L’organe financier autour duquel les dirigeants de la <a class="hashtag" href="https://social.alternativebit.fr/tag/synarchie" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#synarchie</a> gravitaient pour la plupart était la banque — aux multiples rayons — <a class="hashtag" href="https://social.alternativebit.fr/tag/hippolyteworms" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#HippolyteWorms</a>. Cette banque avait, bien avant les événements de juin 40, étendu son emprise sur certaines administrations, en particulier, grâce à <a class="hashtag" href="https://social.alternativebit.fr/tag/demonzie" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#DeMonzie</a> et son chef de cabinet <a class="hashtag" href="https://social.alternativebit.fr/tag/berthelot" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Berthelot</a>, sur celle des Travaux Publics.
