American Robin in the Butternut Tree.
Fun Fact about Butternut (Juglans cinerea): The leaf scars look like tiny faces. We always said it was a monkey face, but this one could also be a sheep.
Summer isn't sure she approves of the newest freeloaders moving in on the duck's food.

Yesterday was posting day for the Bird Whisperer Project on Bsky. This month’s bird was a photograph I took years ago of a male Brown-headed Cowbird. Turn out was amazing and look who showed up this morning. A female!
She wants to know when she’s going to get the limelight.

Ethyl invited a friend to lunch. I had never seen Edith in our yard before; she followed close behind Ethyl but kept a very respectful distance from me. Ethyl was her usual self, whining until I pulled some feed from the songbird feeder and held it out for her.
The neighbors were aghast; while Ethyl is comfortable exploring the neighborhood, we have sufficient evidence the other hens couldn't find their way home if they so much as crossed the street.
I was putting together an apple pie when the quail stopped by.
They are a favorite visitor.
I was up to my elbows in apples but I got a couple of photos through the window.
Summer wanted to greet them personally but I said not today.

One of my favorite morning activities this Spring has been taking photos from my chair while I drink my coffee. Best visitor so far has been this Downy Woodpecker.

The lawn is greening up;
And the finches are golding up
(just a little so far).
The jays have learned how to signal that the birdbath needs water, standing on the concrete pigeon or at the lip and staring expectantly at me. What's funny is how polite they are about it. When they descend into the yard they screech loud enough to wake the dead. And when the chickadees want the feeder refilled, I never hear the end of it.
| still can't tell if this is Jack or Jill. Their spouse was in the silk tree keeping watch.
The nice people at #CornellLabofOrnithology sent me another tea mug. Maybe if I donate to them for two more years I'll get a full set?
