Carl S. Gutekunst<p>After dominating the airspace for three weeks, the fledgling Cooper's hawks disappeared. Today the jays are making a huge commotion, apparently trying to reclaim their territorial prerogatives. But it appears there are two different clans arguing over whose turf it is, with neither side really asserting dominance. Meanwhile, the house finches are asserting their own imperatives, ignoring the jay's efforts to drive them out.</p><p><a href="https://sfba.social/tags/BackyardBirds" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>BackyardBirds</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/ScrubJay" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ScrubJay</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/HouseFinch" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>HouseFinch</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/Birds" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Birds</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/BirdPhotography" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>BirdPhotography</span></a></p>
504 Battery Dr<p>Using pennies in a bird bath to deter algae growth. <br>It's a good idea, with one caveat. <br>_______________</p><p>"If you want to try keeping your bird bath clean using pennies, then you’ll have to use old copper pennies produced before 1982. Pre-1982 pennies work because they were made with 95% copper.</p><p>Never use newer pennies, as they are made with 95% zinc, which is extremely toxic. Those newer coins have a layer of copper over the zinc, but if the coating is broken and the zinc becomes exposed, it releases into the water and makes the water toxic." </p><p><a href="https://birdchronicle.com/copper-pennies-in-bird-baths/" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">birdchronicle.com/copper-penni</span><span class="invisible">es-in-bird-baths/</span></a></p><p><a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/birding" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>birding</span></a> <br><a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/BackyardBirds" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>BackyardBirds</span></a><br><a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/Nature" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Nature</span></a></p>

Carl S. Gutekunst<p>The Cooper's Hawks are getting more visible. The two were playing in the trees all morning, calling loudly and flying from tree to tree; and I got lucky when one stopped to admire their domain from the telephone pole.</p><p>This pole is very popular with the larger birds, especially jays, woodpeckers, and mockingbirds; I have many pictures of our pair of scrub jays, Jack &amp; Jill, perched atop it. But I haven't seen them since the hawks moved in.</p><p>I like this shot. Usually I zoom way in on the birds, but the old oak tree in the background gives this shot a kindof wild Serengeti look</p><p><a href="https://sfba.social/tags/BackyardBirds" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>BackyardBirds</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/Hawk" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Hawk</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/CoopersHawk" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>CoopersHawk</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/Raptor" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Raptor</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/Birds" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Birds</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/BirdPhotography" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>BirdPhotography</span></a></p>

Carl S. Gutekunst<p>After a year's absence, we have hawks again: a pair of juveniles have been playing in the trees around us and making a lot of noise calling to each other. Alas, while our previous family were red shouldered hawks, which mostly each rodents, these are Cooper's hawks, which mostly eat other birds. The jays and mourning doves have almost vanished in the past week, and even the crows are keeping their distance. They also tend to hide, making them challenging to find and to photograph.</p><p><a href="https://sfba.social/tags/BackyardBirds" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>BackyardBirds</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/Hawk" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Hawk</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/CoopersHawk" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>CoopersHawk</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/Birds" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Birds</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/BirdPhotography" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>BirdPhotography</span></a></p>
