Burgers oppakken, ze zonder aanklacht of proces deporteren naar een buitenlandse martelgevangenis en het Hooggerechtshof negeren dat sommeert onterecht uitgezette burgers terug te halen; het is de praktijk van een politiestaat.Zo ver is Nederland niet, maar de beweging gaat in dezelfde richting. Toenemende controle door het staatsapparaat: klimaatactivisten die thuis bezoek krijgen van de politie. Afwijzen van een rechterlijk vonnis door politici, het denigreren van rechters. Ernstige dreigementen jegens mensen in toga. Gebrekkige toegang tot het recht voor het merendeel van de Nederlanders; de sociale advocatuur loopt terug terwijl het aantal toewijzingen voor gesubsidieerde rechtsbijstand groeit. En de veronderstelling dat de Nederlandse rechtsstaat beter beschermd is tegen politieke invloed dan de Poolse toen de rechts-nationalistische PiS-partij aan de macht kwam, is naïef. In Polen moest de constitutie worden aangepast voordat de minister van Justitie zijn eigen rechters kon benoemen. In Nederland is zo'n grondwetswijziging niet eens nodig. Fundamenteler, maar minder besproken is het gevaar dat de rechtsstaat van binnenuit oplost. Zijn drie machten: de wetgevende (parlement en regering), uitvoerende (regering) en rechterlijke macht verliezen hun voor de rechtsstaat essentiële rolverdeling. Alle drie worden gepartijpolitiseerd - de kwaliteit bij uitstek van de wetgevende macht. En daar raakt Pete Hegseth aan de Voorjaarsnota. De uitvoerende macht is gekoloniseerd door politiek met een kleine P. De hoogste generaal van het Amerikaanse leger werd kort na het aantreden van de regering-Trump ontslagen. Eerder insinueerde Hegseth dat Charles Q. Brown Jr. zijn functie dankte aan zijn huidskleur. Trump dreigt de president van de (per definitie onafhankelijke) centrale bank te ontslaan, omdat die weigert de rente te verlagen.Voor de Voorjaarsnota had het kabinet, uitvoerende macht, 8 miljard aan meevallers. Dat bedrag werd door de fractievoorzitters, de politiek, verdeeld in douceurtjes voor de achterban. Intussen is er geen centimeter vooruitgang in de lastigste dossiers. Verduurzaming vereist forse investeringen in het elektriciteitsnet, maar dat lukt niet zolang de stikstofcrisis niet wordt opgelost. Graafmachines om kabels te leggen stoten stikstof uit, elektrische graafmachines moet je opladen- en daarvoor ontbreekt de aansluiting. In plaats van een plan ter vermindering van stikstof, bejubelde Caroline van der Plas 600 miljoen voor de boeren. Rechtsstatelijkheid gaat ook stuk als de andere machten dan de politieke hun taak niet meer vervullen. De uitvoerende macht is opgevuld met stromannen, amateurs en eigengeilers. Dat leidt tot atrofie van de rechtsstaat, het oplossen, verschrompelen van een orgaan. In naam heet het kabinet-Schoof, maar de premier is in onderhandeling de laagste in rang.
