A salutary tale

I thought I'd taken precautions by depowering and unplugging my SDRs before transmitting at around 50W on HF the other day, but I appear to have fried the input of my Airspy Discovery HF+!

In the vain hope that reinstalling the firmware might help, I tried to reset it and flash the device but it could not be found on the USB input.

So it's now also bricked! This was the most sensitive little HF SDR I had, so none too happy today 😭

SDR Firmware

I just spent three hours trying to flash update my Airspy HF+ Discovery. Followed the instruction to the letter but failed every time. 😭

I later found that the Airspys can only be flashed from a Windows 10 machine, not Windows 11! Luckily my older second PC is still on Windows 10, so I was able to un-brick it! So happy now! 🙂

My AirSPY HF+ installation is working again under OpenWebRX+ v1.2.61 after I followed the instructions at groups.io/g/openwebrx/topic/10 to change /etc/udev/rules.d/52-airspyhf.rules

The upstream issue is github.com/airspy/airspyhf/iss and open for quite a long time, udev rules appear to be hard to get right portably.

now some hashtags in the hope I can find this again if I need to find it

Honest Ali sent me his version of a miniwhip antenna. My setup is Mini with SpyVerter, LiFePO4 battery and a fishing rod.

There are heaps of RFI in the city, but some bands are clear. Not too bad...

SatDump
A generic satellite data processing software.

Decode various satellites with SatDump using your Android device and compatible SDR. Receive #NOAA APT & #DSB, #LRPT, #HRPT, and other satellites, including geostationary ones like #GOES, GK-2A, on-the-go.
A good use case is receiving 137Mhz weather satellites conveniently.

Supported SDRs : #RTL-SDR, #Airspy, Airspy HF, #MiriSDR, LimeSDR Mini

Listening to baseball on the radio. #WLW 700 kHz via an #Airspy HF+ and a #YouLoop antenna. Transmitter is about 200 miles direct from here, nearly due south along I-75.

There is some noise under the signal but it's very copyable.

Cubs leading the Reds 14-6 bottom of the 7th inning.

Here is a snapshot from #GQRX. I have stations labelled with the baseball team to listen to.
