Account portability in the social web

Social networks, and websites with a social element, are starting to migrate from being walled gardens towards interoperation and open standards. This is comparable to the adoption of email standards by companies such as AOL in the 1990's.... #activitypub #atprotocol #accountportability #fediverse

I wonder when we'll see custom domain #WebFinger in the #Fediverse / #ActivityPub ?

For example, I want to use:
* @-live.youronly.one for my #Streams account
* @-sns.youronly.one for my #Firefish account
* @-photos.youronly.one for my #Pixelfed account
* @-mblog.youronly.one for my #Mastodon account
* @-reading.youronly.one for my #BookWyrm account

Ideally, even if I move to a new host/service, I can use the same WebFinger.

Indeed, if AP servers like Mastodon are going to extend #AccountPortability to also migrate posts, then that legacy archive could be a huge risk reduction resource for mods when deciding whether they want to accept the person who's migrating.

Because, unlike a brand new account, these folks arrive with a browsable track record. And regardless of what you think about public-access search, nobody sane would object to improved moderator tools making that archive easier to skim. 6/7

@dragonarchitect@rubber.social Hmm…

#Hubzilla and #Streams have #AccountPortability or #NomadicIdentity for years now (which is what #BlueSky is trying to own as “first”).

You can import your content from
#Mastodon to #Calckey (the devs are also looking into making it even better).

#Pixelfed recently launched content import from #Instagram.

If I am not mistaken, there are other on-going discussions from key players into making account portability an integral part of
#ActivityPub. (Or something like that.)

I am somewhat conflicted about quotes. I don't feel QT-ing prejudice against
#neurodiverse into our groups/circles as some sort of dunking opportunity would improve our day for many of us, just amplify concerns about societal attitudes. Also...

Personally, having (valid) questions, criticisms & professional experiences relating to Brexit debate QT'ed in to the Brexiter circles and therefore getting dogpiled, harassed & threatened was an extremely unpleasant experience on birdsite.

However, that said I've been using QT on Calckey and enjoying the convenience and encountered no problems so far.

The issues may well be a question of community standards and moderation more than it is really a question of toolsets.

I do wonder if people wanting QT should be told, "make a Calckey account" (for example) and not "You are wrong to want QT". I have probably been more worried about QT existing than I should have been, as it seems to be used differently (so far) here in the Fediverse.

Calckey is a cool social platform, similar to Mastodon. The *key apps are big in Asia & growing rapidly in west. Has a great UI and lots of fun features. I'd really recommend making an account to check it out for yourself, it's easy to do and there is no drawback.

Export your follows.csv

Use
https://calckey.org/join/ to pick a server to make an account on, doesn't really matter about server too much, like most fedi stuff.

Then upload your follows.csv

Bingo you can experience fediverse super easily another way easily seeing people you follow because of all that cool inter platform co-operation stuff in the underlying protocol.

Big thing about Calckey is you can upload posts from other servers and other social platforms, like Mastodon (not with media just yet, that's coming)

Having my followings.csv just be created on request and dropped into my Calckey drive (so I can then upload it to my Mastodon account @Artbear@Mastodonapp.uk so I follow my people from both accounts) is just one of the coolest things ever!

Awesome feature, super useful native storage in platform on Calckey and awesome Fediverse functionality generally. Social platforms that aren't fighting each other, but co-operating effectively and you see your circle from all of them! So cool.

All these talk about #BlueSky and complaints about #Mastodon this, #ActivityPub that, #Fediverse this, and #Decentralisation that, are mostly questionable(?) since many haven't seriously looked around the fediverse. It's like saying burgers are bad because you've tasted McDonald's yet there are better burgers from #Jollibee.

#AccountPortability (#NomadicIdentity)? Check out #Hubzilla and #Streams (the latter is in the #PublicDomain). #QuotePosts / #QuoteReplies? There is #Calckey, #Akkoma, Hubzilla, Streams, to mention a few. Oh! Many Mastodon forks have it as well. You want a #Twitter-like UI/UX? Use Akkoma or #Rebased. What else?

The problem stems from the fediverse ending up **unofficially** represented by a very limited-feature software and most are not willing to do their due diligence (one would think they'll check out the forks at least). Before championing about the new kid on the block, before claiming that the fediverse is this and that, look around first.

What you've known as the fediverse, so far, is only based on what happens to be the software with the least feature set. Mainline Mastodon will get better, but it is what it is currently, as far as comparison with similar fediverse projects.

No one is saying you are not allowed to complain, just look around first before you make claims about the fediverse.

Also, no one is saying #ATP shouldn't exist. By all means develop it! Innovation and improvements come from seeing ideas come to fruition instead of staying as theories. Having different branches of development is better than getting stuck in one particular way of doing things, or line of thinking. It's all good and I think anyone will agree it is much welcomed.

Here's a #challenge: Since you have time to research a non-fediverse network, why don't you explore what the fediverse really has to offer, with the same effort and enthusiasm? Mastodon is not the fediverse, so you can not judge the fediverse based on it. That's like saying China is Asia, and you judge Asians because of mainland China.

Take the challenge, then publish the results of your journey. Good evening, and Shalom!

I've implemented user-signed activities in #Mitra. For demonstration purposes I picked Update(Person) activity (because it's easier to work with) and Ethereum signatures (because Mitra already supports them). Here's how the process looks like from the user's perspective:

- Get unsigned activity from the server. It's a JSON object transformed into a string.
- Sign the string with your wallet
- Send the signature along with the key identifier (DID) back to the server.
- Server inserts signature into the original activity and sends it to the followers.

Other Mitra instances can verify the signature inside the JSON object, even if the signer is not an ActivityPub actor. When using Ethereum signatures, the signer is referenced by DID, and embedded proof looks like this:

"proof":{
  "created":"2022-11-02T20:44:34.135673162Z",
  "proofPurpose":"assertionMethod",
  "proofValue":"ca031fc9c0d8bc71f7c3570ed3eb656c46ada1fb54f1a130005a2b249d93f83b595b8c7092996a7ac08c1b6335b0457b0767358efcb0b94b0f2658cee127eb7b1c",
  "type":"JcsEip191Signature2022",
  "verificationMethod":"did:pkh:eip155:1:0x198ad1c900a575068879d5b0aabacbfefac522fa"
},

The same mechanism can be used for sending Move() activities, and this is how we get #AccountPortability in Fediverse.
