Friendly reminder that if your project's community is 100% discord, then I'm not joining or using your project.
And I don't think I'm alone in this.
At the bare minimum, set up a matrix room and bridge it to discord https://t2bot.io/discord/
Of course, IRC-discord bridges and XMPP-discord bridges also exist…
It's almost an effort to keep your community isolated.
@yarmo IRC or gtfo.
@alrs@lsngl.us @yarmo@fosstodon.org How about Revolt?
@thatonecalculator @yarmo not irc, do not want.
@alrs@lsngl.us @yarmo@fosstodon.org Well not everyone uses IRC :/
@yarmo My experience is that those bridges are nice but really underused by users. My project started on IRC and it was really empty. After moving to Discord, the channel gained tons of active people. I run Matterbridge and there's 1 person on Matrix, no one on IRC and I think at one point 1 person visited the Gitter channel.
I like giving people options, but it's a maintenance burden for me. Thankfully Matterbridge has been pretty stable recently, but it's not perfect (messes up some things).
@yarmo Good discussion. Note that (AFAIK) Matterbridge and common IRC-Discord-bridges are relaybot bridges. They create single bot user that relays all messages. Matrix based bridges on the other hand use puppeting, so every user has a proper user on both sides of the bridge. It's much more nicer to follow than relaybot based bridge.
I agree fully, if you use Discord, at least give an option to join via Matrix. Setting up the bridge takes 2 minutes and it's zero effort after that.
@yarmo Is your objection to discord that it's proprietary or something else?
