@sir i2p is also good for “decentralizing” centralization. Basically these protocols undo the continued and uncompromising attack on decentralization that ISPs have been waging since the 90s. Suddenly you have a reliable address again, with no need to ask the DNS/DHCP to pretty please give you one. Even if you use 0 hop tunnels for no anonymity, it’s still a huge advantage. https://geti2p.net
This is an interesting messenger:
It addresses one of my key complaints with Signal regarding centralization by making your user account a Tor onion v3 address and running a hidden service on your device, which other users connect to to chat. No one is in charge and you don't have to trust anyone. There are no centralized servers.
Pretty cool idea! Tor is basically bulletproof and sounds like a damn good foundation for new secure protocols.
Seems to be in early development but the concept is cool.
There is also the tox protocol, which offers something similar: https://tox.chat/
I haven't looked into it recently, but at least one client has been known to burn mobile data very quickly. Which is to be expected when being a full node for onion routing, but some people did not read the description or did not fully understand the implications.
Briar or Conversations routed through Tor to a trusted server are probably the best chat methods, but if those are blocked in your locale then Delta chat is maybe a fallback. The main issue with Delta chat is that if your adversary is a state level entity then they will have the email metadata and know your social graph via that, and that will assist them in any mass arrests.
Okay people, we've seen #Mozilla degrade more and more for years, and we've always hoped it will find its way and get better.
Now people working on Developer Tools, #MDN, and the Rust team - arguably some of the most useful and valuable teams at Mozilla - have been laid off, to make space for more profit making activities.
This is utter bullshit.
But perhaps this is also an opportunity. The FLOSS community forked OpenOffice, XFree86, and other huge projects.
