While I totally understand wanting to express oneself via text-formatting in tweets, unfortunately mathematical characters and special characters don’t come across well to screen reader users. #accessibility
You 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘬 it's 𝒸𝓊𝓉ℯ to 𝘄𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲 your tweets and usernames 𝖙𝖍𝖎𝖘 𝖜𝖆𝖞. But have you 𝙡𝙞𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙣𝙚𝙙 to what it 𝘴𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘴 𝘭𝘪𝘬𝘦 with assistive technologies like 𝓥𝓸𝓲𝓬𝓮𝓞𝓿𝓮𝓻?
@liaizon My "hot take" about decentralization is that it is incompatible with people who don't have an interest learning how it works. Decentralized networks are as fragile as their least educated members.
HAM radio licenses requires the applicants to understand how the radio works, and how to repair it would it fail. I can't picture what a truly decentralized and accessible network might look like, it seems like freedom and convenience are at odds with each other.
Poor password security at the British branch of Mensa?
The website of Mensa - the club for people who have scored highly in an IQ test but who feel their social lives would be improved by hanging out with other people who chose to join a club after scoring highly in an IQ test - is said to have suffered a cyber attack.
“You can't succeed if you haven't decided what you intend to accomplish. More important, you can't fail. You can enjoy all the satisfaction of completing a dozen tasks a day without making any progress toward a single goal.” I think that’s also about constant configuring of our tools but not doing much with them 🤷
And frankly, I think IP should be taxed since holders rely on the government to protect it. If I have a house, it’s at least hypothetically possible that I can defend it myself. That’s not possible with intellectual property. So if holders are relying on that government to uphold its value, they should be expected to contribute proportionally to that value for the service.
@qutebrowser update today with some "Major Changes"
Mostly about the Whatsapp bait-and-switch, but also has some good points about the complexity of software. Once an app becomes too complex for one or two developers to maintain then it tends to become a corporate entity with all of the problems which go along with that.
For an independent open web, systems and protocols need to be simple enough that they can be managed by individuals or small teams.
Interesting that they do a "factory reset" on the @POTUS #twitter account, clearing (but archiving) all tweets, following and followers - ready for the new president.
Would love the same factory reset option on every social network profile, including on #mastodon.
A "delete all data but keep my account" option would be great.
I’m going to talk about making captions and transcripts, and go through a couple of services I’ve used for automating speech-to-text. If you want to join in/ask questions live, we’ll be doing that too! This evening 5pm Irish time.
The energy consumption of Bitcoin exceeds that of the Netherlands (https://cbeci.org/cbeci/comparisons)
Bitcoin is a crime against our habitat and thus a crime against humanity.
It says a lot that http://whitehouse.gov/accessibility/ appeared on Jan 20th 2009 and ran through Jan 20th 2017 and then was a 404 for the next four years. It reappeared this morning.
The global energy consumption in 2017 was 22.3 terawatt hours.
If we moved all financial transactions over to Bitcoin, we'd require over 1000 terawatt hours... each day(!) for Bitcoin transactions alone(!).
That doesn't even factor in that Bitcoin's energy consumption will be exponential to the amount of transactions.
Latest Mastodon release supports #gemini links! https://github.com/tootsuite/mastodon/releases/tag/v3.3.0
I’ve been using Thisten, which is a really affordable starting point, and editing from there. If anyone has any tips on other tools and workflows for producing both transcripts and captions from the same source material, I’d love to hear them.
If you feel strongly on: Fediverse culture, meta-analysis, commentary, or community here, I think the Fedi at large needs to do some preventative work to ensure that "Fediverse" does not become synonymous with "far right angry people".
I have https://library.activitypub.dev which could use more submissions. We need ppl to encourage reporters to document how Fedi was the "no Trump tweets here" place that mainstream social media is now becoming & the refuge for trans right activists.
More ideas needed.
Facebook gave $50,000 to the Republican Attorneys General Association, who through their 501(c)4 arm Rule of Law Defense Fund helped organize the protest preceding the deadly attack on the U.S. Capitol that took place on January 6, 2021.

Fosstodon is an English speaking Mastodon instance that is open to anyone who is interested in technology; particularly free & open source software.
