eix-sync?
@Wyatt so many things in a update script producing this ...plus I snipped the all output ...took just a screenful. :)

What's your go to update/upgrade? I've been using Gentoo for over a year and still feel like a newbie. Kernel upgrade is beyond easy enough. I normally just do -aqvDUu --with-bdeps=y at-world for my system upgrade. Which might just be overkill for a normal upgrade. I tried masking Thunderbird to keep it's brand new release but Portage just wasn't having it. So I masked the package improperly I'm guessing.
@Wyatt I run my system with a very minimal set of software. Because my work doesn't need too many to have in the system. So, as a result, the update and upgrade are most of the time pretty small including their dependency. This lean system has evolved over the decades of use. Removing unnecessary stuff is one big thing I have learned from using things and helps. Adding is easy and it brings overhead too. Lastly, I have built my own kernel over two decades on various other distros I have used. :)
