People are really good at complaining about stuff that is both #OpenSource and free! They don’t pay for it, or even try to help out, but they still have the audacity to demand things be done in a certain way or require support.
That’s rich.
That’s privilege.
It’s disgusting.
It’s burning out amazing inventors and kind people who donate their time and often own money to give something back.
@troglobit This is one side of the coin.
The ther side, as a software creator, you make people dependent on your software. Disruptions and changes disrupt their lives.
Do creators have a responsibility to their users? You seem to say they don't, but this is an arguable answer.
@dcz I don’t know who you are, but I’ve been a maintainer of #OpenSource software for over two decades.
The license under which I distribute my software packages clearly state the responsibility I have. Personally I go above and beyond that, like most fellow maintainers.
It’s not a drug I peddle, but I don’t go out of my way to disrupt people’s lives nor try to make them dependent on me. What are you playing at?
@troglobit If you operate a ferry and people go to school using your ferry every day, can you ignore feedback when you create a change that makes it harder to board for some?
You live in a society, and that creates mutual dependencies all over, both formal (license) and informal (custom). Unilaterally ignoring them is one stance, but it's by no means universal.

I’m a single individual, I have no responsibility to ferry school kids every day just because I donate a boat now and again. Because I get stress relief from my day job by making beautiful boats, I’m not responsible if someone use one of my donated boats to rob a bank or kill someone. See why the analogy is bad?
Just because I give you something for free doesn’t mean I suddenly owe you anything.
@troglobit @dcz #fairpoint made, I get it. The downside is that from the user perspective there is an investment of time in effort in accepting “a boat” : docking fees, maintenance, getting a good mechanic, etc.

Why are you trying to make me the villain here? I’m giving away my work for free and now suddenly I have a responsibility to the rest of the world? Like any agreement between adults, there’s a contract. Sometimes unwritten but not here, my software comes with a license. Read it.

@troglobit This seems all right as an individual, and for users who download the software once and never update it.
But in reality, software grows and gets updated. It's not rare that a distribution ships a new, braindead version, that the users have to put up with, because they don't have the resources to do anything else.
The more I think about it, the more it resembles this question:
do developers owe anything to users if their software has a security problem?
@dcz what are you on about? My liability is, like I said, under the license of the projects I’m representing. Anything else falls under local or regional laws.

If anything, you’re the one who’s been baiting. I have tried to be true and honest, something I cannot attribute to you. Why should I have to answer to you all of a sudden? I can state an opinion, defend it if I must, without it having to come to this. But you seem to have it out for me somehow, why? What have I done to you to cause such harm?
