I'm okay with Mastodon being the Linux of social media. It doesn't need astronomic growth to be awesome
@thelinuxcast true and based-pilled.
@thelinuxcast I'm okay if it's merely a distro.
Agreed. Huge numbers of users won't make it better, in some cases could make it worse.
@publiclewdness @thelinuxcast I disagree with this take.
(Low user count => no problem) != (High user count => won't make better, in some cases worst)
while Linux doesn’t have the desktop presence, it absolutely dominates the server and supercomputer fields
(although I have no idea what that equates to in the social media sphere)
@cerement @thelinuxcast I suppose the analogue would be that all the awesome people are here, even if it isn't the majority of people. :p
But more seriously, I think people tend to get too caught up in idea that bigger is better. That isn't always true.
@thelinuxcast this makes it awesome!
@thelinuxcast I want ActivityPub to be the Linux of social media: Everything runs on it but most of the users don't know or care about the underlying technology.
Mastodon can stay small, but it would be nice to see federation become the standard way everyone expects the internet to operate.
@autolycus @thelinuxcast absolutely this. Seamless interoperability and open standards.
@thelinuxcast yeah its a win for us
@thelinuxcast But it would be good if everyone used linux!
@thelinuxcast it is awesome. I don't know about the technical stuff but it feels safe and comfortable.
@thelinuxcast so you're saying the sound doesn't work?
@thelinuxcast I completely agree.
Especially being european, it really suits me.
Here I feel we care more about having space for yourself to be yourself, instead of just stacking up achievements.
We might have smaller cars & smaller houses, but we are less unfree like the Americans are, constantly chasing that next big thing.
Hygge
@thelinuxcast we'd say Mastodon is more like the Illumos of social media. Bluesky is the Linux of social media, broken and janky and with a disturbing amount of corporate backing.
@thelinuxcast yeah, it frustrates me every post I see calling for it to be made more and more like twitter to "pull in users!"..it's the same as people complaining that linux isn't exactly windows, gimp isn't exactly photoshop, etc. Those people should be ignored because they just want something free that's exactly what they already use so they don't have to learn, they're not interested in trying anything different.
@thelinuxcast I HATED twitter, even before mr. apartheid took over, the algorithm that people "love" and trends promote shallow replies and anger/hate over having conversations, the quoting system people want so badly here was 99% of the time used to brigade, harass, and dogpile on people. I'm perfectly happy with this not being a twitter clone.
@thelinuxcast I don’t want growth but I do want less corporate social media destroying things and addicting people with aggressive software choices and structures. I wish they would come here because it is better.
Even the “takes a little effort to set up” is part of that. I am not a Linux person or a techie person but I got it going! We can do things we don’t already know how to do!
@thelinuxcast also both have the best mascots
@thelinuxcast tbh being called the "Linux of social media" sound like a compliment.
