TECH SAVIOURS .ORG

A new section popped up in our wiki - Linux Mobile!

wiki.techsaviours.org/en/phone

It covers @danctnix Arch Linux ARM build script and @postmarketOS pmbootstrap

And here is a bit to read regarding a daily driven PinePhone.

techsaviours.org/news/en/new-l

@postmarketOS s especially POCO x3 NFC I can help to test, just need a spare phone, what about the PPP? ;)

@PINE64

By the way, which is the most usable Linux phone at a reasonable price?

So the Oneplus 6(t) it is.

Thanks for the replies!

@techsaviours Depends on your needs. PinePhone and OnePlus 6 are worth looking at.

@techsaviours I bought a OnePlus 6 that is well supported, good specs and not expensive.

@techsaviours OnePlus 6 with postmarketos or Pixel 3a with UbuntuTouch if you need camera

@lolgzs @pavel @justin
@Lioh

Thanks!

I forgot to mention camera. Thats important too. Doesn't need to be a 1892890190 mega pixel camera but just a picture of a sunset for example would be nice.

So...
- camera
- battery (20% at 8pm)
- calls
- text messages
- browser (search and read here and there)
- matrix

@techsaviours @lolgzs @pavel @Lioh ah camera is one of the rarer things that work on mobile Linux.

@techsaviours @lolgzs @justin @Lioh Is old kernel ok? Then Droidian on OnePlus 6. PinePhone does all that, but you have to be careful with battery.

@pavel @techsaviours @lolgzs @Lioh as long as it's still patched for any security issues that are found.

@techsaviours @lolgzs @pavel @justin @Lioh
Does linux need to come pre-installed?
If so, you are looking at the pinephone or the librem5.
The price of the librem5 might place it out of reach, but there is a night and day difference between it and the pinephone for usability.

@jlcrawf @techsaviours @lolgzs @justin @Lioh What is the battery live on Librem 5? PinePhone cas stay few days in suspend...

@pavel @techsaviours @lolgzs @Lioh @justin
If I remember right, last year when I went kayaking, I left itin suspend for asbout 8 hours and it wss down to around 40-45%. Since it is my daily driver, I don't usually leave it in suspend that long.
Light usage, it will last most of the day.
I keep a charger at the house and office, as well as in my jeep and backpack so that I always have one wherever I go.

@jlcrawf @techsaviours @lolgzs @Lioh @justin Ok, so that is a big difference to PinePhone. Its battery life is not great, but I estimate it can do 48 hours in such a light use.

@pavel @techsaviours @lolgzs @Lioh @justin
It has been over a year since I used the pinephone, but usability on the Librem was vastly improved over the pinephone when I moved over. Call quality on the pinephone made it virtually unusable as a phone a year ago.

@pavel @techsaviours @lolgzs @Lioh @justin
So, I accidentally left the librem in the jeep last night.
It's battery percentage was in the 90's when I got home at 7:30ish. It was at 46% at 6:30 this morning.

@jlcrawf @techsaviours @lolgzs @Lioh @justin That's really not too good. I assume pinephone can last 4x that at least. It lasts ~100 minutes of heavy use, but the standby time was reasonable.

@pavel @techsaviours @lolgzs @Lioh @justin
No, its not great, but it is a vast improvement over both the librem and pinephone a year ago.
I keep a charger at work, at home, in the jeep, and in my backpack. I have accepted the fact that I will probably ruin the battery.

@jlcrawf @pavel @lolgzs @Lioh @justin

Do you use the original pp or pro?

I just updated my Android to version 14 and now had to experience that lsposed github repo is archived. I was still using xprivacylua.

Anyway, I'm tired of Android. I want to try Linux Mobile again.
Does call work on the Pro?
I have 3 batteries, so it could last at least a day.

Still looking for a oneplus 6 as well.

@techsaviours @pavel @lolgzs @Lioh @justin
I have used both. but I haven't used either in over a year. Calling was much better on the PP than on the Pro a year ago. The Pro was virtually unusable as a phone (though, I managed for a year myself with it).
Call quality and general usability is why I recommend the Librem. It is definitely more expensive but overall it is a much better product.

@lolgzs @techsaviours If camera works for you on OnePlus, can I get uname -a and pointer to the sources? Postmarketos wiki does not list camera as working...

@pavel @techsaviours No camera support for OnePlus 6 nor Pixel 3a on PostmarketOS yet. You have to use either Ubuntu Touch or Droidian

@techsaviours Xperia + Sailfish... while part proprietary, it's dependable and daily drivable

@techsaviours I picked up a #Fairphone 3 for £67 including postage on ebay recently though they are normally a bit pricier than that

@techsaviours Another #LinuxMobile system that has not been named and that works very well with the #Pixel3a is @droidian. Droidian works very well on the Redmi Note 9 Pro (on all Miatoll devices) and although it is currently without official maintenance @gnumdk will take care of its maintenance.

@anyDr0id @techsaviours @droidian @gnumdk I have a #pixel6 with droidian. Not functional for daily driver but developing fast, and fascinating to dip into every now and then

@davidoclubb @techsaviours @droidian @gnumdk It's a shame but Droidian is not fully functional on the Pixel 6. It wasn't even on the official website as a compatible device. I have used Droidian on the RN9Pro as a daily device and it is wonderful. Now I'm waiting for @gnumdk to add it back to the community devices

@anyDr0id @davidoclubb @techsaviours @droidian

You can test it if you want :)

github.com/gnumdk-miatoll

- Kernel has ben updated to last 4.14.336

- Kernel is enhanced with backports and Android community improvements

- Batman has been replaced by in kernel power saver

- Default repo contains battery-input-manager: gitlab.gnome.org/gnumdk/batter

You will find in README instructions to move to my build without reinstalling.

GitHubDroidian on miatollXiaomi Poco M2 Pro / Redmi Note 9 Pro / Pro Max / 9S (miatoll) - Droidian on miatoll

@techsaviours good choice ... for a true #linuxmobile experience, don't forget to give #sxmo a try ;)
