In terms of the current wave of people deserting X for #BlueSky I think that extolling the virtues of decentralisation and the fediverse to the masses was never going to be a sane strategy. It's too complex ...
If we just said "Get an account on mastodon.social" It's be a lot easier to get people bought in. For those that might get it, follow that with "other options are available" and see if they care when they react ...
Also, I'm seeing lots of people deleting their accounts, or just their tweets ...
I haven't done that. I like having my history online, and being able to preserve people's RTs/quote tweets/reply threads with me on twitter. While I don't like or use X now, it feels wrong to just delete the content from the internet.
It also means your stuff is probably only preserved deep in the existing AI algorithms that have quite likely already sucked up and analysed what you wrote after getting there first
Oh and one other thing. If the people you point at mastodon.social are the type of people who are reasonably well off, maybe also suggest the "If it's useful to you, give the people running the servers a bit of money to help with their costs" is a good way to help explain how this sort of thing can work in practice ... It'll be fine to pay less than your mobile, music or Netflix subscription ...
It's up to us, the users, to push it if we want to make this a ubiquitous system ...
I've never got into instagram (although I did create an account years ago). Didn't really like anything about it, even more so once Facebook acquired it.
But @pixelfed is something I can get on board with and I'm going to give it a shout for something because I believe in it and want to encourage others to do so. Leading by example is the way we can win people across to the #Fediverse #pixelfed
Hmmm looks like the main @pixelfed Android app doesn't allow multiple accounts. Any suggestions for others that do? #pixelfed #Fediverse
@sxa If you can still download your Twitter archive, do so and maybe publish it somewhere?
@TonyPrintezis Yeah I downloaded when I stopped using it so I have a full archive (I possibly should post it somewhere but that requires effort ), but it doesn't fix the historic RT/reply thread issue caused if you actively delete stuff so I don't want to be clearing my account.
Having said that I do understand why people want to do so. BS is definitely coming across to the masses as what Twitter used to be ...
@sxa
#Bluesky and #Mastodon
users can now talk to each other with
#BridgeFed
WONDERFUL
Simply follow @bsky.brid.gy
https://techcrunch.com/2024/06/05/bluesky-and-mastodon-users-can-now-talk-to-each-other-with-bridgy-fed
@sirber Yeah definitely not the ideal experience with @Tusky - doesn't seem possible to follow new people on @PixelFed with it either, but it lets me post and I can look at the feeds from it which is definitely the most important bit
I guess if I ever get some spare time I might look at seeing if I can fix it ... Although things like that are becoming quite a long list now!
@sxa @pixelfed I’m using Impressa on iOS but here at a couple of suggestions https://pixelfed.org/mobile-apps
