BYE BYE WINDOWS!

A bit of toiling but now happily ticking along with Fedora 32 as my desktop OS.

Thoughts and Things:

- Giving KDE a go over Gnome was a great idea (KDE Connect is a cool little tool, too)

- TIL what Snap/Flatpaks are and am pleasantly surprised

- Steam's work on Linux gaming (along with all the FOSS community) looks incredibly promising (Rocket League on Linux despite them dropping Linux support? YES PLEASE)

- I may stop ironically saying "Year of the Linux Desktop"...

@stuts Thanks for mentioning KDE Connect. I just switched back to KDE from XFCE for the longest time. Sounds like a useful app.

Regarding Snap/Flatpak, have you ever given Arch a look? Their repos are bleeding edge (doesn't mean unstable) so you always have the latest. If something isn't in the repos there is always the AUR (Arch User Repository) that likely has what you're looking for.

@stuts Another DE I've been curious about for the longest time and tried off and on is Enlightenment. I can't quite put my finger on what made me switch back.

@stuts Btw to get KDE Connect to work I had to open the UDP ports in UFW: `sudo ufw allow 1714:1764/udp`

@WhoNeedszZz You are more secure than I, I just popped my interface into the "trusted" firewall zone!

@WhoNeedszZz Oooo Enlightenment is very macos-like, I use a macbook for work so I will defo give this a go at some point! For now, back to car football video games 😤

@stuts Yo, I'd love to play Rocket League with you. Steam name is same as here!

@stuts Yeah, love that it runs in Linux and I have a Steam Controller to boot.

@WhoNeedszZz KDE Connect was so much fun just to use my phone as a cursor, I don't think I'll practically use it for anything but it's fun to toy around with!

I have never installed Arch but, due to working in HPC, I've got a very heavy RPM bias (CentOS for work) so opted to go with something I can fairly intuitively navigate and configure via CLI.

Thanks for the rec though (and obligatory "btw I use Arch" reference 😉 )

@stuts I think I will like the notification and call sync. And the presentation features on my laptop (that hasn't arrived yet).

Gotta rep Arch! 😆

@WhoNeedszZz I didn't look far enough in to see it does that sort of notifying, v cool!

Luckily I don't really get phone calls (hooray for instant messaging) but other app notifications could be useful if possible/configurable

@stuts I've only had about 20% success rate of running steam games on linux, but that is a 20% improvement from not too long ago!

@mcol Agreed. And not having to bugger around with wine myself is glorious!

There's only a couple of non-Linux games I need to test (Civ V being the next one on the list).

I imagine as time goes on, and Proton becomes even smoother, we'll be seeing a much higher success rate!
