This video that is mostly about foss software is really heart warming, for me at least it hit very close to my heart, and gave me the warm fuzzies, small projects that seem to be uneccessary can be so important in some people's lives. I don't get people that say "why do we need another x" why don't people just contribute to y instead?.

Same. We all love reinventing the wheel, either because we don't like the original or just to learn something.
@yyp Exactly, or just to experience something together with someone, a lot of it for me is about learning yeah, and I don't think everything has to be new or the next best thing, going in to a years old established program to learn or starting to maintain code you didn't write is usually way less satisfying too :)
