#Snikket server January 2022 release is live!
The main new feature introduced in this release is the ability for users to import and export their account data. This is the final achievement of our #NGI DAPSI funded project on improving account portability and migration in #XMPP.
Find more details, including install/upgrade instructions, via our blog post: https://snikket.org/blog/jan-2022-server-release/
Enjoy!
Do you have a non-technical iPhone user in your circle of family or friends? Do you wish that one day they will use #XMPP to communicate with you?
We're still looking for more non-technical people to participate in usability studies of Snikket to help us identify areas for improvement. It will be a short online session with a UX researcher, you just need a computer and browser. No experience of Snikket is required. Last available slots are **tomorrow**!

π Our iOS app is finally public! π
https://snikket.org/blog/snikket-ios-public-release/
This is a huge milestone for the project, and proof of what we can accomplish when a community comes together around a purpose.
The app link will automatically appear in the next Snikket server update (along with some other app-related fixes), but the post has manual instructions for admins who just can't wait π
Exciting news! Thanks to funding from the Open Technology Fund, the excellent folks at Simply Secure will be working with us to improve the usability of #Snikket, particularly our iOS app.
If you're interested in helping out with the usability study, there is an opportunity to participate with 30 minutes of your time. No special expertise required :)

RT @NGI_DAPSI:
Imagine this: The messaging π¨ platform you use to connect with your family and friends shuts down tomorrow. How do you secure your #data?
Does this worry you? Then you must meet project XPORTA - #XMPP Account Portability!
π
https://dapsi.ngi.eu/interview-meet-project-xporta-xmpp-account-portability/
"People are often forced to agree to unfair data collection practices just to communicate with their loved ones. Open standards, interoperability and data portability are the technical foundations required to improve this situation."
The recent news of blabber.im's shutdown is unfortunate for many. This kind of event is why we are working on account migration tools for #XMPP ( https://docs.modernxmpp.org/projects/portability/ ). We believe it should be easy for people to move between providers.
It is also why we are working to make self-hosting easier so more people can own their communications: https://snikket.org/service/
Finally, if you are looking for a new XMPP service you are welcome to request a hosted #Snikket instance: https://snikket.org/hosting/
Familiar with Swift, UIKit, and know your way around XCode? Want to help advance the state of #XMPP on #iOS?
π± We're looking for developers to help bring our iOS app over the finish line! π
This will be a paid short-term project producing FLOSS. DM or email matthew@snikket.org if you're interested.
Not an iOS dev? That's okay, boosts appreciated too! π
Very excited to announce that #NGI DAPSI will be funding user account data export and migration in #Snikket and #XMPP! This project will give people more control over their data and ensure they are never locked into a specific XMPP provider.
The latest version of our Android app recently landed in @fdroidorg and Google Play. Thanks to @iNPUTMICE@twitter.com for his ongoing dedication to the #Conversations project which makes this possible.
Most quietly exciting feature in this release? The ability to create new user invitations directly from within the app's main menu. We sponsored this feature in Conversations (available in 2.9.2). Invitations can be created in-app on Snikket or other #XMPP servers supporting XEP-0401 r0.3.0 (e.g. #Prosody).
New blog post: "Products vs Protocols: What Signal got right"
https://snikket.org/blog/products-vs-protocols/
This extended version of @mattj's recent #FOSDEM talk explores the thinking behind Snikket, and what #XMPP and #decentralized protocols can learn from #Signal's success.
Easy-to-use privacy-friendly messaging platform. Open source and open standards.
