@snikket_im very minor clarification: Google had accepted the version that reinstated the contact permission. This was live for a couple of days/weeks until they suddenly changed their mind. They didn't just outright rejected the update. https://gultsch.social/@daniel/112084175241312889
Interesting that you still had contact list integration soft disabled. That confirms that Google believes contact permission == uploads data. Considering how Google makes money that kinda makes sense I guess...
@snikket_im Jeebus, that's fucking awful and entirely on-point for Google.
I wish we had a properly supported FOSS OS for mobile devices, the situation without something like that just seems completely untenable. :/
@snikket_im weird world to assume if you have access to some data you must be uploading it. But I guess Google is projecting
@snikket_im Deja vu. It's a shame Google is like this, but F-Droid is a better home anyway
I get almost all the Apps I use from fdroid - apart from Banking and that sort.
But not being in Play store puts a significant entry barrier in place for 99% of the people...
@snikket_im par for the course for Google's ecosystem.
@snikket_im surprised google was anal about the privacy policy part, apple was fine with a page that just said “My application does not collect user data” (though it was confusing to figure out I needed that - the whole set of requirements it’s a bit ambiguous for open source clients of arbitrary servers)
@snikket_im Thank you for exposing the details. Looks like a nightmare, and I have the neat feeling that most of G. responses are not from a human.
