they promise you privacy and then there is a scandal... it will keep happening. The reason: corporate services - the interest is not the user but profit making.

Decolonizing Circles Design

“we (still) live in a world dominated by the mythos of easy Google and easy Facebook. But the reality is that people invest a lot of time in learning these tools, because for many people, this is not an option but an obligation.” — Circles UBI Project

Fact: If you pay for Spotify, a portion of your subscription fee gets allocated to artists YOU DON'T EVEN LISTEN TO.

Another fact: It takes 3000 - 5000 streams *per hour* for an artist to make the equivalent of the California minimum wage.

Mastodon has a verification mechanism, though it looks different from Twitter's. We do not ask for your documents. Instead, if you have a website that you are known by, you can verify that you are the owner of that website.

Link to your Mastodon profile from the website, either through a visible link, or through a <link> tag in the head of the document, with a rel=me attribute, and link back to that page from your Mastodon profile. It should then get a green checkmark, like @Mastodon.

Hello @Gargron
I am about to stay on the street, due to the abuses that exist in rents and precarious jobs. If it were up to me, I didn't care, but I have a cat that is my point of support…. Let's see if you could share this fundraiser so we can rent something, since they don't allow animals in the rooms. I'm desperate.
Please rt ♥️
Thank you, even if it's just for reading it 😘

Sad to see that #FairEmail is going away..
I started to use it last summer because it was basically the only MUA that supported VMC/BIMI (that's how I discovered it), and I just liked it more than k9-mail.

However, thanks to google unreasonable crap - the development has now stopped.

Crypto is good.

Oh you're offended? This may be because the term is occupied by currency and blockchain bros to a point where most people do not see any difference any more and start barking.

Crypto is short for cryptography, not for currency, and that's awesome stuff.

Not convinced? Without crypto you get

* No "secure" messages
* No password manager
* Your accounts free for the taking - everywhere
* Your messages public - for everyone

Let's see how many bots I can lure out.

considering migrating away from my self-hosted gitea instance to sourcehut.

pros of gitea: i control it fully
cons of gitea: my instance is closed for sign-ups so nobody can open PRs and i don't have an email list, the software is kinda clunky and github-esque and not as minimalist as sourcehut

anybody have thoughts or advice?

Even if Elon doesn't end up buying Tw*tter I am staying here.

I love it here. It feels like home. I have found a family 💚

We are approaching a new era in the ; the mass implementation of self-hosted instances thanks to easy-to-set-up software and affordable third-party hosting services.

Corporate interests are following closely and are late to get in but soon or later, they will.

It's up to us to build quickly a safe and robust environment free of corporate power. Support the projects (even by donating), support your instances, help others.

apparently my elderly neighbor has been maintaining a personal website about the history of UK photography and it is an incredible piece of work.

apparently he still uses some piece of adobe software from the 90s. there is so much care and effort here, and its such a pristine image of the early web being still updated 😭

If we combine our Twitter and Mastodon followers, less than 23% are here on Mastodon.

If you think free software tools should be favored, to build free software tools, you can act:

1. Unfollow everything you can on Twitter (you could also suspend your account for one year, to try).

2. Follow us here and follow as many mastodon accounts you can.

It could be a very strong signals to developers if they realize that they have more followers on Mastodon than on Twitter.

Gajim 1.4.0 has been released 🚀

After more than a year of development, it’s finally time to announce the release of Gajim 1.4.0! 🎉

Gajim 1.4 series comes with a completely redesigned message window and conversation management. Workspaces allow you to organize your chats to keep matters separate where needed. These changes were only possible by touching a lot of Gajim’s code base, and we appreciate all the feedback we got from you.

Clean up the web!

A reminder that you, as a developer, can make a difference on the Web simply by choosing not to perpetuate people farming on your own sites and apps.
