Hello & welcome.
Windows 7 locked me out one year when I was still in school and needed to finish a report (said it was a pirated version). I was so furious I vowed to use Linux ever after and have stuck with that..must have been 2010 because I remember installing Ubuntu 10.10
For me it was when my motherboard crapped out and I put the hard drive into another computer so I could keep my files and settings. It told me I had to buy a new Windows license for the "new computer". Haven't looked back.
@ryandaniels so to really open a can of worms...what #linux distro?

First went with Ubuntu 16.04 
for a while. Liked Unity 7, but later Gnome wasn't my thing.
Linux Mint 
for a bit because I like Cinnamon DE 
Back to Ubuntu (18.04) with Cinnamon DE.
Manjaro 
now with KDE Plasma 
and it has been great.
At work it's all RHEL (servers).
@ryandaniels your story sounds like everyone else....all over the map . Glad i'm not the only crazy loon
