Finally updating my Dad on the phone front (we bought him a Pixel 4a for his birthday). Yes, that's a galaxy S4.:-)

@rfquerin
So... what's going to happen to the S4? Will you use it as a bedside clock?

@randynose he's gonna keep it there just as a spare. The new one will be a bit of a learning curve but it's not like he was an expert with the S4. He just has a much better phone and I removed a lot of the hurt from my tech support role at the same time. Two birds. :-) He's 83 and on his own so it will give him a bit of a learning challenge but he says he's up for it. 👍

@rfquerin
Yea, I'm cogitating on what I need to do for my Mother-In-Law down the street. - I'm thinking I'm going to test out the Chromebook that I have, and don't use, on her to see if she's ok with it VS the old Windows 7 machine... I _Could_ try Windows 10 on it, but.... Not sure if it would be worth the effort. - Just need to see how well it (Chromebook) will work with a keyboard and Monitor.

@rfquerin
The wife uses hers all the time, Although she's got the fonts way to big, and still doesn't get around on any machine well.

@randynose psst.. I go up a notch on font size too. No shame in that.

@rfquerin
Ah, font size... My pet peeve. All OSes I know of or use, with the exception of Ubuntu/GNOME, set it too darn small by default.

I turn some up. But EXTRA LARGE is a little to much.

I think her email looks about like this on her Chromebook... Maybe bigger. 😮

@randynose
Due to my diet, I don't eat regular pizza anymore (I no longer eat bread among other things). But I do make my own (from a recipe in a cooking book, close enough to the real thing)... It's been a while, I'll make one tomorrow. 😋
@normand @rfquerin

@randynose my dad has an old Dell laptop with Xubuntu on it but he hardly uses it. If I were to get him a new one it would likely be a Chromebook because all he really does is use the browser and Gmail. It's a good choice for cost and simplicity in terms of updates and maintenance (basically none). I've had zero issues with mine and while I've moved away from it for work related stuff, it's still on the family room table because it's really almost instant on and is great for web based stuff.

@rfquerin
This is handy in the living room... Great for setting 🍕 pizza and ice cream 🍧 on.

@rfquerin
Great for him. My dad is 82 and lives on his own too. He still got a very old Samsung phone with Android 4 if not older! It's just an emergency phone. But he has a recent Android tablet he uses constantly.

My dad's got a 2nd Gen Nexus 7 tablet but he doesn't use it much. He does most of his news and sports reading on the phone. His eyes are better than mine! So hopefully the new phone will help make that a little better.

@rfquerin
I tend to browse news on the phone, and read some of it on the phone, but I also bounce to the computer sometimes..

Hey, I got a 2nd gen Nexus 7 tablet too, and I still use it daily! Mostly for a local news app and for cooking help when I'm in the kitchen. 😁

I usually read most of my news on my phone, because it's a lot more portable than the tablet.
