Hi mastodonians(?) I'm Renato, I'm an Italian living and working in Switzerland, I'm a sysadmin/devop by trade, I dabble in game design and like to think and talk about games. And hobby models. And food. And language and languages. And tech.

And a boatload of other stuff.

Check out my game A Scoundrel in the Deep that I wrote with my friend Flavio where you tell stories and play with (literal) fire:

and get it PWYW at PayHip

This is worth sharing.

It's an animated GIF where every frame is a valid QR code that leads to the "Never Gonna Give You Up" rickroll.

That's kind of amazing.

EU folks, the latest @EU_Commission proposal for scanning private communications and undermining end-to-end encryption is an extreme threat to privacy.

It threatens the right to meaningful encryption and would force your communications to be subject to scanning and classification by AI outside of your control. Truly dystopian shit.

This won't become law without the EU parliament's assent, so please follow this closely and speak up. See EDRI's analysis here:

Been playing Rogue Legacy 2, I'm terrible at it as expected, but already better than with 1 (which I do like). Tonight I beat the first TWO bosses!

The various classes are surprisingly different in play and it's fun to learn to use them.

Oh, it's poplar fluff season already?

It's basically snowing in slow motion and horizontally at the moment

"Nespresso... What Else?"

Half a ton of blow, apparently 🤣🤣

And there's ZERO chance this was the first shipment of this kind, it was a well established operation for sure, come on.

The curb cut effect: for example, media descriptions right here on Mastodon help people who use screen readers, but they are also useful for explaining the joke for people who don’t get it, for translations of text, and for copy-pasting what would otherwise be just an image of text.

@Epidiah I was thinking about your Vast and Starlit animations... They could really leverage the nature of the Fediverse I believe: make an account on a Pixelfed (IG-like) instance, let the bot post there. People can then follow, boost, comment (answering) both there AND here on Mastodon.

And it would be a neat coding exercise I guess 😁

PSA: The "verified" symbol you see on Twitter etc means absolutely nothing on Mastodon or the Fediverse. On here, symbols like :verified: are just custom emoji that anyone can use and put after their name. Don't be fooled! 😁

There are ways to verify your identity on here, but the :verified: symbol is not one of them.

The easiest way to verify your identity is if you have a website that people already know is yours. You can paste a special code into your website which will verify your address and it will turn green on your Mastodon profile (see here for instructions: mstdn.social/@feditips/1062741).

Alternatively, you can set up a server as a subdomain of your known website address. For example, the European union set up their own Mastodon server at social.network.europa.eu, and we know it really is the EU because the server address is part of the EU's well-known europa.eu domain.

Great news for people that are using the official Mastodon apps (at least on iOS for what I can see right now) - They have just added the local timeline in the latest update! It’s in a bit of a weird place though: you have to click the search icon and then you have different tabs one of which is called “community” that is essentially the local timeline of your server. Pretty neat!

Discovering new people via masto-toot gives me nostalgic vibes of wandering geocities and clicking on webrings long ago.

Seeing a lot of people weirded out that "Masto admins can read your DMs!"

Unless it's end-to-end encrypted, any admin of any system you use — Twitter, Facebook, Slack, GMail, etc — can do that.

hope this helps

Oh this is fun!

The Mirror Fediverse is shorthand for all the servers full of hard racists, fascists, abusers, etc.

If you come with some horrible shit, people won't just block you; they'll report you and talk about doing so. If your server admin doesn't shut your shit down, isn't seen to be taking action, we'll talk loudly about THAT, too, often using the #fediblock tag.

Your server will start disappearing—not for you, but to everyone else. You'll softly and suddenly vanish away.

Be good. #feditips

If you're coming from Twitter, you might not recognize the "post privacy" option.

Basically, each post you send on Mastodon can have 1 of 4 privacy settings: Public, Unlisted, Followers-only, or Direct.

Basically, Public goes far and wide, Followers-only is nice for more personal stuff (and can't be boosted -- retweeted), and Direct means it's like a Direct Message to any and all users you mention (tag) in your post.

@Tay0 @ru (hope I'm pinging the right person) hi, I got a warning email because I posted in Italian... it was a message to another user on an Italian-language instance, I didn't think it would be a problem (I'm also multi-lingual).

Anyway, the mail says it's OK if I'm "followers only" or unlisted, but I don't see where to set those either I'm afraid.
