I disagree with one part: where you say it doesn't matter which server people join. In some ways, it really does matter. (e.g. if you're ever harassed & you need support from your mods, or if your instance ever defederates from an instance where some of your friends are.)
But you've done what I think is a good solution to that hurdle, which is to recommend some. That's my policy now: if I recommend the Fedi, I figure out first which instance might suit that person.
@unchartedworlds thank you. I agree with your comment and with those reasons. There's also the issue of what you can and can't see on your instance. I figured skirting around these points to demystify the Fedi is the way to go.
