I don't know how long this has been a thing on Android. Likely an Android 11 thing I think, but when I'm powering off/restarting my phone the last thing I'm thinking off is setting up a Google payment method.
Does /e/os do this‽ Actually. I don't care. I've ordered a new phone that is /e/os supported.
@pswilde I think the mindset you're holding here is wrong. It's not that they want you to associate power off with payments. The feature is intended to give you quick access to a configured payment method or a household device.
On iOS there's something similar where when you double press the power button, the Apple Pay option is brought up. Lots more people than you think use the built-in device wallet :P
@brandon you're right, it would be convenient if I were to use it, but IMHO the option shouldn't be there if gpay isn't configured.
I was more annoyed that I was so used to the previous menu (pop up on the side of the screen) that the first time I saw this my finger was already pressing the gpay setup area and launched into the setup wizard, hence the "grrrr"
@pswilde Totally get what you're saying. Maybe the idea is discovery of the feature? I feel like Google might be better working on a "tips" app that by default sends notifications based on what kinds of usage you have on the device
