Hey. I'm Cassidy (he/him). I'm just checking this place out. I like FOSS and technology so I thought it might be fitting. I also like nature, hiking, backpacking, and climbing.

Heh, new users are great. Everytime there's a wave of users coming in from another social platform, it feels like a small victory for decentralized networks. The more users there are, the more the systems are tested, the more they get optimized, and the better they become ^^
I mean whats better than a network that allows you to communicate with everyone on it, yet have your own rules?

@wgahnagl in my dreams I'm not actually employed by a company. That's why I put quotes around _job_.

I would like to get to the point where I can live from donations from people that value my contributions and from selling the (free!) software I build.

But I got to agree with you, it's certainly not easy getting a job in FOSS. Nonetheless, I think it's worth working towards such a goal!

YouTube is updating their Terms of Service on 10 December, 2019. It presents an awful possibility for the future of creators on the platform. It seems they will be able to terminate your channel if it's "no longer commercially viable."; in other words, wherever they feel like.

If you were to ask me what I wanted to become 3 years ago, I'd have said "a software engineer at a big company, like Google, Microsoft or Facebook", because that's "where all the smart people go".

Now, my dream "job" is to work full time on free software. Programmers that don't contribute to free software are doing something wrong. It's not all their fault - the education system prepares us to work in corporations - but it's still a bad thing that we should do something about.

Centralised power structures are always going to be simpler to manage and use. Platforms like Facebook, Insta and twitter are designed to control your attention. So all of us are habituated to certain ways of using social media as opposed to others. Taking back the control of our attention and employing it in places that doesn't tell you where or what to look at, is going to be hard. But it's neccesary. This is going to require persistence, willingness to learn and adapt.

Eugen Rochko, Mastodon's founder:

"On top of that, a decentralized system presents unique discovery challenges. It’s one thing to get someone to try out Mastodon, but for them to keep using it, they need to acquire the happy medium of content and personal connections to have a reason to come back."

"The ideals of the epic world obviously do not have much to share with women, nor do the women enjoy the heroic values. There is little they can do there - other then get abducted or rescued, or pawned, or molested, or humiliated in some way or other. So, what happens when women choose to retell an epic?"
