As a user of liberating software, free culture works, or user-respecting online services, it's common to want to contribute back but not know how. One contribution anyone can make is to send a message to the maintainers telling them a few things you like about it, thanking them for their work. It's easy to remember to complain about bugs or missing features, but like everyone, creators need compliments too, especially when they are volunteers.
I find it deeply upsetting that children tend to favor closed-source platforms that have glaring security and privacy holes. Look at Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook and Discord. I have lost all respect for Discord, because I care about my privacy online.
It's sad to see all the work put into open-source privacy-conscious platforms almost ignored by the younger generation. I believe we need to educate them to choose the safer alternatives to 'mainstream' social media. Take Mastodon, for example.
