Hi everyone! I've been on the Fediverse since March on a maastodon.net-hosted instance. That service closed a while ago and I finally got around to making a new account.
Other than that, I'm a high school student with an interest in decentralization, and what that means for privacy. I've been using as much FOSS software as possible for as long as I can remember, and I try to contribute to whatever I'm interested in and open source my own projects.

What are the #linux distros everyone is using, and what's the main reason you use that specific one?
I'm not running linux at the moment because I'm travelling and only carrying my wife's laptop, but I'm extremelly compelled to install it here 😛
Amazon filed a patent to pair facial recognition surveillance with a doorbell camera.
"Simply walking up to a friend’s house could result in your face, your fingerprint, or your voice being flagged as 'suspicious' and delivered to a government database..."
I can't bring myself to believe that artificial intelligence will bring an end to creative labor. you can't reduce creative labor to the artifacts it produces, and that the value of those artifacts doesn't inhere purely in their form. sure, I think a lot of the value in art comes from, like, visceral spectacle, but some amount also comes from being able to identify and appreciate the choices made in their production—and people are really good at identifying and distinguishing these choices
Thank you Signal team for staying committed to fighting mass surveillance. Open Whisper Systems is a great non-profit as well and I applaud them for having Signal be FOSS.
Tor needs your help.
So does an entire ecosystem of privacy and anonymity projects that rely on Tor: https://blog.torproject.org/strength-numbers-entire-ecosystem-relies-tor

If Tor disappeared, what would happen?
Not only would millions lose access, but the diverse ecosystem of privacy, security, and anti-censorship applications that rely on the Tor network would cease to function.
An entire ecosystem relies on Tor. https://blog.torproject.org/strength-numbers-entire-ecosystem-relies-tor
Google patents aim to "scan & analyze your home & offer content based on what they detect" & to "use sensors & cameras to restrict kids’ behavior."
Or, in other words, super creepy and more risk of your family's data being leaked or misused. No thanks. https://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2018/11/google-patent-bedroom-privacy-smart-home/576022/

Today we celebrate #HumanRightsDay. Passed exactly 70 years ago, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights memorializes the basic notion that fundamental freedoms, including privacy, expression, and access to information, are essential for people all over the world.
We must defend and protect the universal human rights to privacy and freedom online. Tor is critical in this fight.

Hello new #Mastodon folks! 🐘
Have you heard of the #Fediverse? 🗺️
It's a set of community projects that use the #ActivityPub standard to talk to each other.
Mastodon is the most well developed, but there are many works in progress too:
YouTube -> PeerTube 🎞️
...and many others.
Hello, I have recently joined the FOSS world, but care about much more obviously. I am happy to be a part of Mastodon!
Fosstodon is a Mastodon instance that is open to anyone who is interested in technology; particularly free & open source software.
