Companies will start setting up their own servers. Creating their own communities dedicated to the companies. Terms of services include dedicated tracking questions. Soon evangelical people are hired to the companies not by resume but by their social life. Live the companies way of life. Influencers migrate servers and followers weekly, moving to the highest bidder. Choosing a server is based on vanity domains, and where your family "lives"

#realtalk mastodon will have scaling issues with millions of servers with 100/1000 accounts per server.
It will get to a point where blacklisting becomes so cumbersome that its easier for moderators and server admins to start whitelisting.
Thus comes the decentralized silos of communities. Instead of a single server, each community will be a set of federated servers. (Hopefully not) only talking to each other.

@ticoombs based on what model? how did irc achieve this? is netsplitting the worst irc experiences?
#coffeethoughts If mastodon takes over from facebook
@nergal irc is not federated. It solves a different problem and is no where near the scale of 100 million users all with the ability to connect with everyone else.
Email is the only thing like it.

@ticoombs @nergal false. IRC *is* federated, just differently, and that is a major part of why IRC can scale up so easily.
Unless ActivityPub is worse than I am currently aware of, the network scaling up should not affect any instance all that much, period.
You are making statements without providing any data to back them up. Please provide evidence that these concerns are the slightest bit credible.

@pixelherodev
I meant federated in the same way activity pub is. If your telling me, I can join one server and talk to /anyone/ on different servers then this is news to me. Efnet can talk to someone on rizen or freenode?
As far as I was aware IRC was not federated. Searching for federation or "federate" on the irc wiki returns no such details. Thus I am confused. 1/2
