Hi there, here’s a little
I retrained (after years of repairing computers for friends and family), a couple of years ago to be an IT tech. I landed a job, which required me to automate many tasks with PowerShell, and I fell in the automation trap! so, I am currently learning Python. So here I am, to meet like-minded people, to share opinions, projects, virtual beverages…

@pill That sounds great, it's a lot of what I do as well, automating, and stuff, I also get to work on our linux servers so throw in some bash scripting there for good measure :)

@pill A lot of different things, Outlook email tasks (OWA + AS devices) Sending of FTP files, Updating phonebook from AD, automating updates and delivery of monitoring servers, fixing some annoying things that come up over and over and so on, just a lot of small things, I have also written some specific monitoring scripts and the like, making backup of hardware firewalls and just loads of small different tasks that is tedious to do manually :)

Welcome to Fosstodon. Things are slow at first but as you find people with similar interests and follow them, others will follow you. Create your bio, add an avatar pic and some emojis to your name so others can learn more about you. If you haven't, sending out an introduction listing your interests will help.

The custom emoji list is here:

Good luck and have fun.

Nice to have you with us! New here? Start with following some tags and people! Go check out public stream on your server to find some. Keep adding more people and tags, you can always unfollow something you don't want later.

Also do share your own stuff - write posts, upload images and add relevant tags so similar-minded people can easily find it. Consider filling out your profile as well, no personal data required. Any questions? Don't hesitate to ask, we are here to help.

Have fun on the network! :)
@pill What's the automation trap? Is that where you automate everything until you have nothing to do? Or where you try to automate everything, but some things take more effort than doing them manually?

Anyway, welcome! I too have been doing this stuff for a long time - Linux since '98.

@tulpa Thank you!
I think it’s when you are all alone at work and you come back home knowing that these recurrent tasks you did could have been automated, if only you had more time…
Anyway, I am still a learner :)

@pill Learning is a lifelong thing, right?

I find that in my job, the servers are so messy and individual, that I avoid automating anything, lest I break something. Thankfully, I have more than enough time to deal with the things I'm asked to do by hand. (Mostly RHEL upgrades and wipe/reloads.)

@pill welcome! There's plenty of python enthusiasts around here, including me. 🙂 I've recently been working on a python tutorial series:

@pill I've done quite a lot of python, but I'm very much an amateur in doing tutorials so I'm happy to receive any feedback.

@pill Welcome! I'm a python nerd who's trying to (re)learn Powershell. Ever since I discovered TOEMS

@WillowMist Thank you!
I searched for TOEMS, it sounds great :)
What do you mostly use Python for?
Happy learning!

@pill Mostly Django for organizational databases. School integration stuff is my main thing :)
