Make VoWiFi calls from an open source client using asterisk: https://osmocom.org/news/297 - osmocom main contributor @sysmocom has recently released a forked version of asterisk that can be used to make VoWiFi calls using nothing but FOSS, a smart card reader and a SIM card. #foss #opensource #telecom #3gpp
@osmocom @sysmocom hahaha. In 2004 (iirc) I did a 3 months internship at Orange France, they asked me to evaluate if it was possible to implement this on the openmoko phone. They gave me no specs, no hardware, just a desktop computer in a room. most of the internship was spent trying to get an openmoko, without success. I increased my linux skills during the internship, but my answer was a straight "not without a team of specialist telecom engineers, and certainly not in 3 months". That was fun.
@osmocom @sysmocom this would seem massive news to me. I've never looked into buying a 4G device for myself, but now if 2G would stop working one day, I could just use a USB SIM reader and with any internet connection I could make and receive calls again?
This seems to be a complete game changer to have a mobile phone number without relying on any proprietary software. (Apart from what's running on the SIM.)
@sysmocom @osmocom it's funny. I use a Sony Ericsson J120i and once received an SMS message "VoLTE has been activated". I couldn't imagine that to be relevant in any way to me at that time :)
I have some old USB SIM readers, so I might be able to try this. I played with Asterisk before too (mainly with ISDN and SIP). This is really amazing to see!!
