Oshu<p>With so many varieties how I have just one <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/Keyboard" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Keyboard</span></a>?</p><p>Took this one off the shelf today to use for a little while. Nothing special, a heavy frame and cherry mx reds. These <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/keycaps" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>keycaps</span></a> give it a loud &quot;clonk&quot; sound that I&#39;m enjoying.</p><p>I think <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/Keyboards" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Keyboards</span></a> can be like watches. Use the same one all the time or rotate your collection :)</p>
Oshu<p>The new <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/AI" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>AI</span></a> shopping assistant from Amazon is <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/Rufus" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Rufus</span></a> and Rufus is happy to help ...write python</p>
Oshu<p>I finally reached MVP on my project to make a <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/writerdeck" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>writerdeck</span></a> with <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/linux" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>linux</span></a> on my <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/AKP846" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>AKP846</span></a>.</p><p>I&#39;ve not yet attempted any hardware mods. It runs with a <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/raspberrypi" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>raspberrypi</span></a> 4 connected by a usb cable. Powered by a USB power bank connected to the rpi, it lasts multiple days in between charges.</p><p>The screen looks much better in person. The photos don&#39;t capture it well.</p><p>Full write up to follow.</p>
Oshu<p>One more <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/AKP846" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>AKP846</span></a> update. Here is my <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/writerdeck" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>writerdeck</span></a> proof of concept test. Not bad!</p>
Oshu<p>Made some progress with the <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/AKP846" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>AKP846</span></a> and <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/linux" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>linux</span></a> today! Here you can see <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/lxde" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>lxde</span></a> which is running on an <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/orangepi" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>orangepi</span></a> pc2 (what I had around).</p><p>Still very wonky...</p>
Oshu<p>Sat night with <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/altair8800" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>altair8800</span></a> mini and <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/cool_retro_term" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>cool_retro_term</span></a> for a round of <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/zork" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>zork</span></a></p>
Oshu<p>There is no <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/linux" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>linux</span></a> support for the Ajazz <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/AKP846" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>AKP846</span></a> but I&#39;ve managed to make some progress with a driver for the screen chipset, which is made by Racer Tech.</p><p>It is a bit unstable so far... Exploration continues!</p>
Oshu<p>Turns out there is a Terminfo file in <a href="http://www.catb.org/esr/terminfo/ufo.ti.gz" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no"><span class="invisible">http://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">catb.org/esr/terminfo/ufo.ti.g</span><span class="invisible">z</span></a> for the <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/Tandy" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Tandy</span></a> <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/Model100" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Model100</span></a> that might work on the <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/PC8201A" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>PC8201A</span></a>!</p>
Oshu<p>It&#39;s alive!! I had to improvise a couple of battery holders but this Nec <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/8201A" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>8201A</span></a> is working again!</p>
Oshu<p>At one point I wondered what would happen if I insert a disc that has a playlist file of internet streams instead of tracks on the disc. As <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/mpd" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>mpd</span></a> is so flexible, it simply plays the streams, as long as there is internet access.</p><p>Accidental internet radio. Neat!</p>
Oshu<p>Thanks to the holiday time, work has progressed on my <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/MiniDiscXL" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>MiniDiscXL</span></a> project. All basic functions work well and the code has been cleaned up a lot. Also, I switched out the MO drive for one that is more compatible with <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/linux" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>linux</span></a>. It seems those with a Fujitsu mechanism are the best bet.</p><p>Internally, it uses <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/mpd" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>mpd</span></a> and each disc has an m3u file that lists the contents called playlist.m3u. This playlist is loaded into mpd each time a disc is inserted.</p>
Oshu<p>I wonder how many people here use <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/smart" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>smart</span></a> or <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/connected" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>connected</span></a> appliances. My friends and I who work in tech jobs all refuse to let any such things into our home.</p><p>I will never buy any appliance that requires an internet connection. I love my simple dumb appliances!</p>
Oshu<p><a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/MiniDiscXL" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>MiniDiscXL</span></a> (left) vs <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/MiniDisc" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>MiniDisc</span></a> (right)</p>
Oshu<p>Recording modes are SP (512k opus), LP (256k opus), and SLP (128k opus). FLAC files are also support for playback.</p><p>The network cable coming out of the front is for debugging. Next I need to make a black face plate for the drive and a hole in the back of the chassis for the debugging/network cable.</p><p>It&#39;s been a lot of fun so far!</p>
Oshu<p>The broken cd player was gutted and fitted with a new 5v psu. The front buttons are wired to the pi&#39;s gpio and work as expected. Same for the outputs on the rear which are internally connected to a usb sound card.</p><p>The original power cord and switch are retained and work as expected.</p><p>A <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/MiniDiscXL" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>MiniDiscXL</span></a> disc is actually a mo disc formated with ext2 containing music in the ogg opus file format.</p>
Oshu<p>I got a weird idea to make a new &quot;retro&quot; music format a few weeks ago. Taking inspiration from the <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/minidisc" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>minidisc</span></a>, I dug around in my spare parts collection and this is what I came up with...</p><p>Presenting the <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/MiniDiscXL" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>MiniDiscXL</span></a> prototype!</p><p>It&#39;s built from a broken cd player, an old gigamo drive, mpd, and a <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/raspberrypi" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>raspberrypi</span></a> running some custom python code.</p><p>More info to follow!</p>
