@fdroidorg here's a classic #Google tactic: use "open source" to get devs hooked, then gradually slip in proprietary bits. #AOSP's core apps move ever more towards proprietary, and they also do this with libraries like com.google.ar:core github.com/google-ar/arcore-an

Digital Restriction Management (or short #DRM) is preventing us from harnessing the true potential of digital media. It enforces artificial scarcity for the sake of upholding outdated business-models. A better world is possible. Lets build it together. Let's abandon technology which is #DefectiveByDesign

I finished a 5 part series on how to run an e-mail server in 2022 with all the DKIM/SPF/DMARC stuff working. It's not a simple HOWTO series, but it does explain all the moving parts. So if you're interested to learn a bit about modern e-mail - you're welcome! Starts here: jan.wildeboer.net/2022/08/Emai

@sudo

I don't think of it as *I'm* using Linux but as my GNU system uses it to communicate with the hardware.

I use GNU, because I love free software. And it's the only free sw OS specifically being developed for this purpose.

@alcinnz @logan agreed! But I'd argue we're not going to get them by making non-free firmware more easily accessible and seemingly considered less of a problem.

To every news website:

When publishing computer malware news that affects only Microsoft Windows, I politely urge you to say explicitly that the malware affects only Windows and not another world class operating systems, namely, GNU/Linux and BSD.

Please do not steer public to a false opinion that computer operating systems are only Windows without other (more secure) alternatives.

See gnu.org/gnu and at freebsd.org for example.

Boosts are appreciated.

sure, you're entitled to set your terms, just as the other party is entitled to tell you to get lost.
if you offered juice you made yourself, you could also require people to sign a contract in which they promise not to drink more than a certain amount per day, not to add sugar, not to cool it or heat it, not to dilute it, and not to share it with others; even to demand a certain amount of free labor in return for the privilege of drinking the juice you made, or to take it away if you feel like it, and most people would rightfully see you for a jerk and turn you down. someone dying of thirst might grudgingly accept it. when it comes to software, there's hardly ever such a thing as dying of thirst, but still, jerks seem to have succeeded in giving people the idea that obnoxious terms are to be accepted, and that feeding the monsters and making them stronger is inescapable. our job is to remind software users that it's not so, that they can and should rather tell jerks to get lost

So, we had a fascist incident in #Boston today that resulted in the assault of a Black pedestrian.

Mayor Wu's response was good, and we all need to be looking out for each other. But I find it infuriating that the police spent the bulk of their time shielding the nazi mob from a handful of protestors rather than protecting the public.

Given this baseline of impunity, I expect that right-wing provocations will increase in frequency and become more violent.
