https://lkml.org/lkml/2021/3/3/1332 is making the usual rounds but also #TIL "Tags, unlike branch names, are a global namespace in git."
Also tangential but "swap partitions > swap files" as expounded on by Linus in the same thread.
Afternoon mood: #StillCorners
The rise of #NFT:
Adults — with allegedly functioning brains — are acting like impulsive teenagers hooked on an MMORPG; placing consensual "value" in computer bytes that make up an exclusive skin for one of their characters.
Crypto will slowly eat the first world, and it's resources with it.
In my critique of the tropes of cyberpunk, I pointed out that the neural jack, however potent a visual metaphor, will look in the future as antiquated as the corded telephone does today. (I also pointed out it couldn't work as designed since the requisite I/O cluster doesn't exist in the CNS.)
We absolutely will interface with computers, but we'll do it noninvasively.
With Cameo, Only Fans, and now Twitter's Super Follows; it seems that Big Tech is augmenting their advertising system with another monetization dynamic that reframes "you are the product" to "some of you produce value by virtue of your own existence, while the rest of you consume your own kind, and we are the market peddling those invisible social goods."
I have no opinion on the merits or drawbacks as any introduction of supply will lead to demand; but it's intriguing to observe nonetheless.
It would make my life slightly more pleasant if the cryptocurrency kids would please stop telling everyone they're going to rescue society by removing the need for trust.
A society that isn't based on trust is not worth living in. Replacing trust with electricity consumption is always going to be a recipe for idiocy.
This is probably the only time I'll support #Facebook (not the company, just the precedent that's being set), but the Government of #Australia's recent stance that websites have to pay publishers in order to hyperlink to their content is an affront to the principles that the Internet was founded upon. It's nothing short of ludicrous.
Armchair Dystopian Prediction: Next they'll introduce legislation coining the term "hypolink" as a form of sanctioned syndication.
#Infrastructure? I separate concerns the way BigTech separates ethics.
The anti-censorship community sets a few things straight, and gives their own views as it relates to the #Signal debacle (ironically because Signal is refusing to openly discuss it).
Pretty cool, the IEEE's manufacturer list of hardware addresses: http://standards-oui.ieee.org/oui/oui.txt
Now I know that my ASUS runs an "AzureWave" Wi-Fi card, but also now I can spoof the first three bytes of my MAC to show up as an Apple, Blackberry, or even a Cray device to captive portals and networks.
We're all one of today's lucky "Ten Thousand" at some point, and likely will be many more times in the future.
Each of us take turns filling up on things that "most" people seem to know, for I have yet to meet one who knows all those "most people" things! (non-overlapping subsets etc etc).
Be kind to today's lucky Ten Thousand! ♥️

Refactored my "curated quotes" side project to give it a mobile-first facelift from the old layout.
