Is like the old saying: Windows assumes you're an idiot, but Linux requires a proof

Hey, WeTransfer, I’ve heard a lot of Silicon Valley bullshit in my time but “we must violate your privacy to save the trees” is a new one even for me.

Please, take a fucking bow.

So I'm not saying it's not convenient that you don't have to manage the servers yourself, it is really convenient, but to think of the cloud or serverless as being somehow new or distinct from 'lots of servers' is a basic category error. Same goes for 'data lakes', 'data warehouses' and all that other shit.

Anyway I'm thinking about how 'the cloud' is actually just marketing bullshit for 'an unbelievable amount of servers running all the time in configurations and locations you don't know about and have little to no control over'. It's not a different category of computing or a new invention, or a quality term, it's just a boring capitalist quantity term.

Same goes for 'serverless' services and all that other malarkey. It's not serverless you're just renting space on a server, abstracted in such a way that you retain the illusion of control while you trust someone else with all your data. It's poop.

I like masto because I only come here when I am in my mindful state of media consumption. unlike before where I was constantly consuming and was being used by algorithms.

This is a long but interesting read. TL;DR: the group that makes the very standards on which the internet is based is being filled with people and orgs who don’t care about your privacy.
